We are the City Creek Chess Club. We’re mostly based out of Salt Lake City, UT and are looking to help promote the game of chess and make it more accessible by hosting free games at our weekly meetups and monthly USCF-rated tournaments.
When/Where do you meet up in person?
Our weekly meetups are free, and you can join us:
When: Every Friday @ 7:00 PM MST Where: Kneader's Bakery & Cafe Address: 28 State St #235, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
What do you offer?
We host free casual games every Friday, online events throughout the month, and monthly USCF-rated tournaments on the last Friday of each month.
Do I need to bring anything?
We ask you to bring a chess set and/or clock if you can but if you don't have one, no worries. We usually have one or two extra sets that we can lend out for the night.
I'm a beginner/I'm not very good at chess, is that okay?
Absolutely! We want to make the game more accessible to anyone interested in the game but not sure where to start.
We try by providing a friendly atmosphere for players to get experience playing Over-The-Board (OTB), get advice on chess improvement, and get info on the Utah chess scene throughout the year.
What should I expect?
We usually get around 6-10 players a night.
When you arrive, you’re more than welcome to watch some games and grab something to eat or drink. Once a seat opens, you’re more than welcome to sit down and play a game or two. Afterwards, you’re more than welcome to switch partners or continue playing some more.
You’re also more than welcome to set up a board at an open table and wait for someone to join you.
Do you host USCF-rated events?
Yes! We host a four-round, Quick tournament on the last Wednesday of each month. This has a USCF-rated section and a non-rated Public section, a section for newcomers and beginners to practice in a tournament format. For more info/register: https://forms.gle/Ba2eBfAt4smRVz7a7
Do I need to play with a clock?
We don’t require anyone to play with a clock if they’re not comfortable. We do recommend playing 10-minute games to give players time to think and practice. This also allows for more games against different players throughout the night.
You're also more than welcome to play 5-minute blitz games if you and your partner would like.
