Here's the thread to the controversial Dresden Olympiad...

Nov-25-08    321ycnay: Our team finished in 46th place, no better than the 44th place we came away with in the 37th staging of the Olympiad, in Turin, Italy. It is understandable that we did not perform as well as we could have, for the Philippines (NCFP) sat on their big guns and benched three big GM’s, namely, perennial board 1, GM Eugene Torre 2560, GM Mark Paragua 2526, (recently had a 2620 Elo rating), and GM Rogelio Antonio 2515. In this year’s Olympiad, we sent GM Buenaventura Villamayor 2468 to man board 1, GM Wesley So 2610, at board 2, GM Jayson Gonzales 2469 at board 3, IM John Paul Gomez 2519 holding board 4, and GM Darwin Laylo 2507 at the reserve. The team had an average Elo rating of 2514.6, good enough for 38th rank behind Vietnam. They actually only use the top 4 boards to get the team’s average.

Had we sent the big three with GM So, and GM candidate JP Gomez, we would have had an ELO rating average of 2546 total team average, and a 2554 for a 4-man tally!

Our best performers and best point-getters were GM Wesley So, and newly minted GM, John Paul Gomez. They scored 7/10 and 7.5/11 points respectively for our cause. They did do us proud with performance levels of 2689 for Wesley, and 2585 for John Paul. They earned for themselves 11.6 and 13.2 additional Elo points for their fine, fine effort.

Next up in the performance chart and still is in the positive area, with the least amount of games, is GM Jayson Gonzales. He scored 3.5, points in only 7 games! He slightly played his rating a bit higher at 2471, and will take home an additional .5 of a rating point!

GM Darwin Laylo, manning the reserve, but played 8 games at board 4, scored another 3.5 point for team Pinas. He however, played 67 rating points lower than his actual strength at 2440, and lost 6.7 Elo points.

Then, GM Bong Villamayor had a most discomforting outing in the biennial meet; He scored 2 points in 8 games, and played 107 Elo below his strength at 2361. He will likewise lose big in the Elo department, 11.2! You can’t beat a dead horse; you just go on and go forward.

Congratulations! GM Eugene Torre team skipper, for providing the steady hand that has been missing in all our Olympiad teams, all these years!

Lastly, we’ll take these baby steps and bring it on strong unto Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, for the 39th Chess Olympiad!
