How is this possible? Not only that, this one player has played several of these mysterious tournaments and has gained rating all the way from 1600 - 2000!

that's a little unusual not sure. have seen foreign rated players have things like that before and gms in international tournaments maybe(?) that were also fide rated maybe but is new to me to not see the td on it too. interesting stuff. martin would probably know.

Members can choose to have foreign FIDE rated tournament.rated under US Chess ratings and if that is done, the event is only going to show that player in the results.

Lots of people have their overseas FIDE rated tournaments added to their USCF rating history in this way. It is optional under a certain level (2400?), but top GMs/IMs don't have a choice.

No losses against higher rated opponents and a overperforming final score from what was expected are probably the two main factors at play.
