What is this madness?

All the chess associations in the us don't even allow me, rated 1818, to play against anyone in the world rated over 2000. What is this? 1400s can play against 1800s but why can't 1800s play against 2000s?

For example, the highest section in almost all CCA tournaments is an open/premier/major section open only to those over 1900. The next section is an under 2000 section filled with 1500s, 1600s, and 1700s. Very few 1900s or even 1800s. This makes no sense at all!

Well, everyone has the same mentality, theres nothing wrong with the chess assosiations. The open section players dont want 1800s in their section

A well known rule says that there is a method to every madness, but there doesn't seem to be one for this!, where 1400s can play 400 points up but 1800s can't play even 200 points up!

but 1800s also don't want so many 1600s 1500s and 1400s in their section! This is a disproportionate bias against 1800s!

Well it may not be fair per say, so just git gud. Why should you play 2000s if you haven’t proven yourself capable of handling against 2000 opponents?

Someone has to face that, it just happens to be you. There is no solution, but to put a different rating section in your place.

They can't have 300 sections

they literally just want me to play against lower rated players only!

yes, but whats this bias!

DTfencer89

To quote Benny Watts in "Queens Gambit" - "Playing in too many opens can only hurt".  Higher levels can only lose by playing against those with significantly lower ratings, so would likely opt to just not play in too many such events.

there's no bias. Just open your eyes and look at the situation logically and think about what a better situation is and how that would affect everybody else.

King_of_Checkmates

how is there no bias?

Does it explicitly say “if you are under 1900 you cannot play in the open tournament” or what?

sndeww

In February I was rated 1373 otb, and I joined an open tournament (it was otb)

I mean, open is open.

So play those lower rated players, and prove your worth by beating them. Raise your rating above 1900 and the problem is solved.

If they made the U2000 section only open for 1600+, then people in a U1800 section that are rated 1500 have a similar issue. Just open your eyes and look at the situation with open eyes.
