A zwischenzug is a so-called "intermediate move". When one player takes a queen for a queen trade, you would expect their opponent to take back. However, if that opponent takes a rook with check, you have to move out of check and lose the exchange. If the opponent recaptures the queen first, you would have time to move your rook out of the way.

By the way this is ‘Zugzwang’ I’m asking for, not ‘zwichensug’.

Sorry, I thought it said "zwichenzug"

Zugzwang is when the king can't move and there is no other piece to move. The game is drawn

Description

Zugzwang is a situation found in chess and other turn-based games wherein one player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move; in other words, the fact that the player is compelled to move means that their position will become significantly weaker, in other words, stalemate.

AcidLemming712, I agree with everything you said apart from the last word

Zugzwang is where you or your opponent are forced to make a move you don’t want to do, hence, making your position worse. Say for example your king is stopping your opponent’s king from invading and taking all your pawns. The only place your king can move is backwards, which will help your opponent. So you just move your pawns forward until they cannot be moved further. Now you are in Zugzwang, forced to make a move you don’t want to do. But it’s not stalemate
