What Role does Chess Play in Public Spaces?

I recently read an article called “What Role does Chess Play in Public Spaces?” and I would like to share it with you.  It mentions how sports and games are great at reducing stress and improving our collective mental health.  Chess in particular is very popular and great at bringing people together regardless of language barriers, age, gender, physical ability, or social situations.  Granted that more than a few arguments have occurred over a chess board, but I still believe chess has a very positive impact on the world.

Many public parks have chess sets available for use, some with very large pieces.  One of my fondest memories from my trip to Switzerland years ago, was watching a couple of apparent old friends playing chess in the park with 2 or 3 foot tall pieces.  It was incredibly relaxing and entertaining.  Back in the 15th and 16th centuries, living pieces were frequently used in the royal courts of Europe.  The Italian town of Marostica has hosted a game of human chess in the central plaza every other year since September 1454.

I don’t know of any really large chess sets available at any of my nearby parks, but I’m starting to search for them.  I was wondering if any of you have places to play in your local areas.  If you have any great stories or pictures to share, please do so.  We would love to hear from you.
