What's the Point of Following? How is it Different from Friending Someone?

Can someone explain to me why there is an option to follow other players?  When you friend someone, you automatically follow them.  But for unfriended players (even ones who you block or who block you) you still have the option to follow them.  I see nowhere on chess.com for you to see who you follow, only your friends list.  So what's the point?

  1. This is not a variants exclusive feature
  2. Following allows you to see whenever a person posts a new topic in the general forums (not clubs) and posts a public blog
