Halloween Gambit
What's your favorite unorthdox opening to use?
I love the Alapin opening. 1. e4 e5 2. Ne2. It is very effective is most games because people underestimate it and often end up getting in trouble. I also like the McLeod opening 1.e4 e5 2. c3. I have played that one very effectively against a wide number of players, even experts with great effect. The really nice thing about it is that I can start with 1. c3 and then convert to it after the opponent plays 1...e5 2. e4. This is often a trick I use to get around the Sicilian defense if I am playing someone who I know is really strong at the Sicilian.
Those two are my clear favorites with the Alapin being my #1 favorite.

I gotta ask Dan, how does the Brooklyn Variation benefit black? It seems to me bringing your night from f6 back to g8 just gives white complete control of the center.
Edit: That should be Knight not night. I'm going crazy...

the idea in any alekhine is to give white a great central dominence but then breaking it and exposing whtie as his pawn are further away from his king

Thanks for clearing that up Dan. I like the game you showed! I wonder though, why 15...Nb4? I can't personally see too great a use for it there, except maybe indirectly pinning his Knight to c3 (to protect a2).
By the way, Dan, I'm the Steve who added you on Myspace.
I'm a big fan of the Hippopotamus Defence.

My favourite unorthodox would have to be the Traxler Countergambit (If you could call that unorthodox)

I'm a big fan of 1. f4, the Bird opening. It's quite effective in one-minute bullet games!
Aye aye - my favorite too. I've found it to be effective even in standard games, but you have to know the different ideas behind the main variations as white in order to be really effective (Polar Bear, Dutch, Antoshin, etc.)

Nimzowitsch Defence!
