Autumn
A chill in the air
The smell of festivals--
cinnamon, cooked meat, trash...
depending on where you step.
Spiced cider, hot coffee, dark chocolate...
everything is pungent and real.
Moving away from the blistering sun and balanced again
like spring; perfect, dying, only to live again and again and again.
Harvesting all the bounty of what has been produced from the earth.
Knowing that it will die and return in an endless cycle of wonderment.
Autumn, winter, spring, summer...
Each one special but Autumn the most exciting,
except for maybe spring...
summer is too hot and tiring. Thank God it's over!
As summer comes to a close here in southeastern Virginia, we are met by those wonderful, warm crisp days with lower humidity and pleasant winds. The calendar says September 21st or so (the Autumnal Equinox, when there is the same amount of light and dark) but the weathermen use September 1st as the first day of Autumn. A third option is the day after Labor Day, when most of us went back to school and Virginia Beach and Nags Head suddenly cleared of tourists like ghost towns. This year Labor Day is Monday, September 7th.
So which of the three signals the end of Summer and the arrival of
Autumn for you all, or is it some other day or event?
