Which one is better: General, Rook or Wildebeest?

on chess.com variants all of these 3 pieces mentioned on the title are worth 5 points, the question is: which one is better

It depends on the variant. In a large board variant like XXL, the rook is easily the best. However, in smaller variants such as rubicon, the general is one of the best pieces in the game. The wildebeest usually comes in handy in specific positions, but is rarely better than the general, and very difficult to compare to the rook.

You are right, for example: a non-royal king is stronger is stronger than a rook on a 3x3 or 2x2 board but a rook is stronger than a non-royal king on a 8x8 board, but what about the rook and the general on a empty 8x8 board: which one is better?

Well, the rook would just run from the general the whole time, and the general is usually better on an 8x8. It's the larger boards that make a difference.

Okay, but the Rook also can attack the General but the General most times can easily counterattack

Conduct an experiment to decide: 16 Rooks versus 16 Generals

there are results of the experiment:

10 Matches:

2 Wins for the Rooks

3 Draws

5 Wins for the generals

(note all moves were computer moves)

Okay, I will try it later when possible

how do you play variants against the computer? @Lucas1009991?

I make a custom position, then I click on analysis and then I just hold space on my keyboard

General and Rook are like Knight and Bishop so who of them is better – it depends on the pawns structure. Wildebeest is as effective in close positions as General but Wildebeest can't checkmate the lone opponent's king (even with friendly king's help) so in such case I prefer to save the General instead of the Wildebeest

Checkmate with the King and a Wildebeest is possible but really tricky

I would agree if there were 2 Wildebeests but it's difficult to checkmate with one (if it's not impossible). The same situation with Archbishop (it worth 6 points)

wildebeest is really bad imo, it should be 4

general and rook depend on board and variant.

overall I say the rook

I think the wildebeest is good enough to be worth 5 on most boards, but only barely. The general and rook are definitely better than it tho.

I do agree rook is typically better, but I think more testing needs to be done than simply throwing hordes of generals and rooks at each other, to asses their respective strengths and weaknesses. Testing should be done by adding pawns, maybe standard chess but one side has generals instead of rooks, or their knights are replaced with the respective pieces, and whatnot.

#21 you are right, that’s better than just putting a lot of them on the board

The mobility of the rook is slightly higher (rook 8 versus general 6¾), so it excels on a larger board.

I think the wildebeest is good in N+ situations. It is very ease to maneuver, and check other royals.

I didn't even think of N+, that seems like the perfect niche for it!

Rook being worth 8? Which drugs are you taking?💀
