This is just a random question but what pawn move do you normally play first it could be e3 or d4

this just a random forum idea I had in my head y’all can debate and stuff or whatever on it

iAmThunderLion

Note it doesn’t have to be a pawn move that you play first it can just be anything

HoneyBearMC

I play pawn to c4 first, The English Opening these days. It’s not for everyone but I recommend it.

I do e4 so I can play the Italian which is what everybody plays at my level

DillWithThePickle

I like the ststegic and positional positions which usually result after playing d4

SAOCM

In general, e4. If I wanted to play an aggressive game, I’d do something like g3 to bring the fianchetto out.

e4 for LIFE!

I play the d2 pawn first. e2 is fine in most cases but if you really want your pieces to eviscerate your opponent's pieces then you need d2 for the d4 start.

d2 opens up for d4 because it's the computer's top recommendation for Stockfish 16, cranked to the max and it creates very fun, wild interesting games. I just beat a 1900 advanced bot, first try after a few weeks of quitting chess practice with d2-d4 as well and helped me toward a 4000 elo opening in my Lucaschess analysis so there's really no issues with it...A player can have one bad move in the opening as well. Sicilian defense bowdler attack is a good proof of this because that is a 2600 rated or more response to some of the best first moves for white.

Playing as white, you can still play e4 since the king can get castled but that's not a guarantee and it opens your king up to get forced around, which ruins the balance of tempo.

Just going into possibilities, d2-d4 allows for well-timed development of the queen and later on, you can ratchet down by gaining small advantages in a contentious but very favorable game.

For black, I would say the pawn they should move first should depend on what the plan should be. Kingside wing direction should be generally seen as more important but the pawn that makes you strongest to hit your opponent's open king, queen, weaknesses, etc. where you can recombine and turn the game in your favor is the pawn you should play.

Even if you start as black, before your first move, you should always think that your pieces can checkmate, even if you think YOU can't checkmate. Like Grandmaster Silman (RIP) said, it's all about the grounds of the game.

I love that fianchetto. Takes a total piece of s**t piece, a lone bishop, and makes its energy do something and if your kingside is on the opposite side then the game is winnable.

Also I’m more of a d4 guy myself I feel it’s better for a good pawn structure and overall good position

RedFastMath

Definitely Nf3

I appear to have a slight preference for 1.d4. I score better with 1.e4, but that’s because I prefer it against lower rated players.

Nf3, usually transposing into a Queen's gambit or the English. I have good experience with both and am fairly good with both, but prefer the Queen's gambit for the solid, positional play that you can get with it.

I love the Italian! If I am white, I only play e4! I am trash with d4 and c4. I usually only play the Italian game. I am around 900 rapid and everyone around my level plays the Italian more frequently than other openings.

e4 is the best overall pick if you want a tactical game. I don’t like positional boring games so e4 is good enough for me.

Me personally I feel that e4 is more boring because of the symmetry of the game which normally comes after e4

AustinDengtt

sometimes e4, sometimes f2

iAmThunderLion

Isn’t f2 the starting square

game55670

c4

GoldenFlicker

There are razor-sharp lines after 1 d4 (such as the Anti-Meran Gambit) and quiet lines after 1 e4 (such as the Petroff/Russian Defense).
