I was responding to the other person who said that they played d4 because thats what stockfish recommended. I do not play moves only because of the computer I just included the lines for reference in case any one wanted to see what stockfish thought about best starting moves at specific depths. recently I have been running the scotch gambit myself. the alien gambit is also super interesting for me. my personal favorite is the Albin countergambit but I stopped playing it because I realized too many people had the right follow up for it to be any fun.

nah we good real talk though when I firsted started to learn chess I was like I want an opening move that grandmasters play because If I ever get good I don't want to have to relearn my openings because it was trash. and so for a while I did use just the cpu but I tried my best to understand why a certain move was the best before playing it.
While openings like 1 b4 1 b3 or 1 g3 are perfectly sound, and especially 1 b4 or 1 b3 are likely to take the opening out of book lines at an earlier stage than mainstream openings, I think most amateur players will get the most benefit from opening with 1 e4, d4, c4, or Nf3 and studying systems that arise from those moves. (1 g3 often will transpose back to a mainstream opening). In terms of what to play as black, I believe Kasparov once said that players should master the classical positions arising from 1 e4 e5 and 1 d4 d5 to understand control of the center before finachettoing bishops. The same principle would tend to apply to opening with 1 d4 or 1 e4 over 1 c4 or 1 Nf3, but black does not have to oblige with 1 ... d5 or 1 ... e5, so you still may have to play against a non-classical opening.
My view is that amateur players should play sound openings that yield positions they understand and with which they are comfortable. It is useful to play openings that you can grow into as you improve, but that does not mean having to play lines that are the latest GM fashion.

I play the d2 pawn first. e2 is fine in most cases but if you really want your pieces to eviscerate your opponent's pieces then you need d2 for the d4 start.
d2 opens up for d4 because it's the computer's top recommendation for Stockfish 16, cranked to the max and it creates very fun, wild interesting games. I just beat a 1900 advanced bot, first try after a few weeks of quitting chess practice with d2-d4 as well and helped me toward a 4000 elo opening in my Lucaschess analysis so there's really no issues with it...A player can have one bad move in the opening as well. Sicilian defense bowdler attack is a good proof of this because that is a 2600 rated or more response to some of the best first moves for white.
Playing as white, you can still play e4 since the king can get castled but that's not a guarantee and it opens your king up to get forced around, which ruins the balance of tempo.
Just going into possibilities, d2-d4 allows for well-timed development of the queen and later on, you can ratchet down by gaining small advantages in a contentious but very favorable game.
For black, I would say the pawn they should move first should depend on what the plan should be. Kingside wing direction should be generally seen as more important but the pawn that makes you strongest to hit your opponent's open king, queen, weaknesses, etc. where you can recombine and turn the game in your favor is the pawn you should play.
Even if you start as black, before your first move, you should always think that your pieces can checkmate, even if you think YOU can't checkmate. Like Grandmaster Silman (RIP) said, it's all about the grounds of the game.
Ok so this is probably not the post you were thinking of hearing in response. but I thought that it would be helpful to you to address that stockfish 16 actually only prefers d4 for a much lower depth is you are using stockfish on chess.com you will ne heavily limited by the fact that it is using your computers power to draw from. but I dedicated 21 of my 24 cores on my computer processor and about 2 days of time analyze the opening position. after 118609 seconds and almost 2 trillion nodes the computer thinks that with a depth of 79/82 that E4 is the best line with a starting advantage of +.14 (rather insignificant) that said I am sure you are aware that you should only play computer moves if you can understand them my elo shot up about 200 when I started spending the time trying to understand the computer plays. I am going to paste underneath this the full log from the engine just so you can see at what depths it thinks what move is best. in general the deeper the depth the more accurate the evaluation is but you have to have the nodes to back it up. I built my PC with the specific intent of being able to do really thorough chess analysis because it was so fascinating. it runs between 16 and 20 mn/s which is 20 times stronger than most computers.
(Psst: I have not even gotten started with how complex computers are about chess evaluations like what biases they hold. for example stockfish has a stronger bias towards finding and threatening tactics while LC0 has more bias to strong positional play but especially at most players level those biases are not super important when it comes to studying but it does mean that in general LC0 is better at openings than stockfish but stockfish tends to be better mid and end game.)
anyway here is my engines log of best lines from 0 to 79 (It will probably take an entire extra day to get to 80 because it becomes exponentially more time consuming for every extra move of depth.) I will let you know if it thinks d4 is best again at that point.
the first number is depth the eval is in brackets then the engines suggested line follows. when the line is a total repetition of the line before it only shows the first move. if it repeats the same depth that means that the engine actually considered another line at that depth and came to either better counterplay for black or a better alternative for white.

Anyway for the time being I am an E4 player through and through and may eventually consider learning Nf3 which is another line the computer really likes.
