I myself think Morphy was a better tactician than Alekhine, but both of them are incomparable to the rating and skill changes in the 150 years since they played, so I think most newer super GMs are smarter than both of them
Who Was The Smartest Chess Player?
i’ve heard that Morphy would be at the same level as some present-day GM’s, so for his time, I think he was the best.
However if you just look at strength in chess, discounting the time period that they lived in, then Magnus almost definitely would win, although some people still think Kasparov and Fischer are in the running.
Personally, I think Alexander Alekhine was the single greatest chess player the world has ever and may ever see. He purposely made blunders and took hours and days to make a single move, all to confuse his opponent, which in the end, he would checkmate them making his reputation and skill incomparable.
