Why can't we have a choice between Solo and FFA?

Prior to the merge, FFA was FAR more popular than Solo.

6 months later, the player base has shrunk, and many are frustrated with the Solo system.  We've even gone out of our way to create a League so we can keep playing FFA + Old Standard, but this is not the answer.

The question is simple, why can't we have a choice between Solo and FFA?

I don't understand the reasoning behind getting rid of the more popular points system, while  Solo could've been kept separate with its own rating as it was before.

Because the admins prefer solo.

Solo is the better game mode for high level play.

In a league format its more justifiable since it creates nuance and meta gaming with trying to give certain players 4th. Also since players want to win the league (or just do well) you dont have to worry yourself with players playing for 2nd.

Solo pretty much makes cooperating pointless.

Not really; most of the gameplay is the same, the difference is that 2nd place cannot win points, and in high level, that gives a great motivation to play seriously rather than settle for a low score.

Everyone should be playing for first regardless if it's solo or not.

That's what we all want; but human nature proves that it's not possible.

Like I've said before, I think that a rating system where both FFA and Solo are available but under the same rating (similar to pre-merge Variants and Hyperbullet) is probably the best solution : P

Hey, at least more realistic than changing the formulas altogether

I really disagree with the merge. even though teaming is annoying and toxic, I find that it's not even the best strat. I will never help the opposing side unless it directly benefits me. The opposing side being the 2 strongest on the board is a benefit and should be considered when playing. However, people way overestimate how important this is for the win.

Merge or not, if you don’t try to cooperate against a player with more material in the endgame, you’re bound to lose.

If you guys like the current scoring system in the FFA league which is 3 for a win, 1 for 2nd/3rd, 0 for loss, then you’d most like 3, -0.428571, -0.428571, -2.142857. That is the solution of the system of equations that I will explain below.

Let X=1st place rating gains. Let Y=2nd/3rd place and Z=4th place. Note that Y and Z are both negative.

League rules show that 3pts for a win minus 1pt for 2nd/3rd is twice 2nd/3rd minus 4th.

Therefore, we’re looking at x minus y being twice the distance of y minus z in both examples. So, x-y=2(y-z).

For the rating system, x+2y+z=0

We established x=3 for both the proposed rating systems and the league scoring system.

So if you want League and proposed rating system to closely agree, you might like 3, -0.5, -0.5, -2 for simplicity.

Disclaimer: I do not own the game, develop the game, or code the game. Should a change in the rating system be implemented, it is up to either BabYagun, Spacebar, or GDII.
