Q - Why don't we play an early d2-d4 in our vote chess games?
A - An early d2-d4 would transpose to a Queen's Pawn opening; most commonly a Queen's Gambit or a Catalan.
Nowadays the Reti move order is often used as a transpositional tool when d2-d4 can be inserted at some early stage in order to transpose into a favorable line of a queen's pawn opening. I fully respect the idea behind this strategy. However, the rule of thumb concerning transpositions is that you must understand the opening system to which you are transposing in order for it to work to your advantage. Using the Reti as a transpositional tool would be a fine theme for a separate group, but it would be far beyond the scope of this small group to attempt it. Therefore in our group games, I feel it is best to stay within the pure Reti book lines until we reach the middle game. This group was created as a learning group rather than a competitive group. Our Vote Chess games provide a place for people who want a first hand experience with the Reti Opening. By playing these fundamental lines in our vote chess games we will learn the Reti. If you are someone who already knows the Reti, then I thank you for joining my little club and I look forward to your contributions.
