Bughouse, a chess variant, is named "bughouse" because its fast-paced, chaotic nature, with pieces being passed between players and dropped onto the board, can resemble the activity in an insane asylum, also known as a "bughouse" in slang. The term "bughouse" is a slang term for an insane asylum, and the game's unpredictable and frantic gameplay is likened to the perceived chaos within such an institution.

this is from 19th century American slang - bughouse, a bug-infested place, that's what they called a mental hospital where you could spend the night and get food
