Windows Update is probably the worst offender of many - in Windows - for stealing bandwidth.

Hi everybody.
The "Edit" button has now become visible for fixing the Topic name.
If it was there - I missed it.  Or maybe it wasn't there.

Avatar of camter

I understood that. What a change!

What change?

Avatar of camter

Don't bother, quit while we can understand you.

@camter  You misunderstood.  But that's okay.  Worse things happen. happy.png

Since its probably too late now - to get this side Topic deleted -
a couple of comments are in order.
I already made some points in another Topic -
about some experiencing very slow "page-loading" in V3 - and others not.
Although its not clear how many.
Perhaps a lot of them are using Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer.
Choice of Browser has always been significant on chess.com.
And it would be a pleasant surprise if Chess.com fixes the Slowness on its own -
but that seems unlikely -
as these V3 slowness problems have existed for something like 2 years now.
But the main point is that this slowness of performance isn't just caused by V3 itself.
There's many other factors.  Including Windows Update on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
So now I want to mention two short points about ways to address that.

These ideas are not suggestions.
I am not telling people what to do.
Some are concerned they "might break something".   You decide.

The first way is very efficient.  If you don't want WIndows updating while you're in the middle of a timed chess game - or otherwise degrading your V3 performance -
then Windows Update can simply be disabled temporarily.
I found this to be more important in Windows 7 than WIndows 10.
Different steps in each - but easy and fast in each..

The other way is forcing Windows to Update itself right away -
and finish doing so before starting a chess session.  Or after.
Or When You Want It To!
Again easy to do - but takes more time than just disabling it.
But only computer time - not YOUR Time.
Its important to note -
that Windows Update cannot help your computer at all -
unless you're willing to restart or reboot your system at least once.
After the Update.
And a complete Shutdown - and then the Power button - is better?
Edit: (Dec 31 2017)  I discovered today that both restart and Shutdown -
may be necessary in some instances.  Found out by accident.
Hit restart by mistake -
and there was a screen announcement about "making changes".
Wouldn't have happened with Shutdown it seems.

Other improvements you make to your system -
also cannot "take" without at least restarting.
And again - Edit (Dec 31 2017) - both a restart and a Shutdown may be necessary in some instances.
This is common knowledge to many.
But its not "superficial" - as many might not know.
There is a third method:  and that is to preprogram Windows Update to do its thing during off hours.  Like 3 in the morning or something like that.  Personally - I don't like that idea ...  because it means leaving the computer on all the time.
And connected to the Internet.  While unattended to.
But again - I'm mentioning options.  Not "recommending".

Windows Updates matter.  And you can't uninstall Windows Update.  happy.png
But its just one - out of hundreds of programs that steal Bandwidth from Windows computers.
Or otherwise degrade performance.  I mean that literally.  Hundreds.
And I mean hundreds on each system!
All simultaneously attacking Bandwidth!
Its ironic that the list of useless WIndows features and programs that can be very easily and quickly  turned off and disabled and in many cases uninstalled - is a very long list - which means that if performance is very poor because of that - then chances of quick successful results get Higher.
If you don't believe me that you can improve general performance by turning off and disabling and uninstalling useless elements of Windows - then you can Google the subject and you'll find lots of confirmation of same there if you want to.
And No - Windows did not "work fine" before V3.  As can be again seen on Google searches of hundreds of Internet Forums (beyond chess.com) that address the Woes of Windows.  And within Chess.com -  Windows Woes and Lag were a constant issue on V2 and in V2 Forums and chatrooms going back ten years or more.  Possibly even before V2 itself.  I don't remember exactly when V2 started - but I remember that Lag and disconnects were always an issue.  Windows always was/is part of that on many Home computer systems.

Another ironic part of this is -
(even though it should be the other way around)
is that the longer the list of useless features and programs on WIndows -
the more likely that nothing will be done by whatever member/owner of that Home Computer system!  happy.png

Well, it is your thread, Playafar, and you can do put in it what you like.

So, I, for one, would appreciate it if you were to continue to do so outside the Forum notes so we can address our concerns about bringing back some of the things which made V2 so great and easy to navigate around the site, and get on with the things we could once do.

So, perhaps they can improve V3 to start to achieve that, so that we all  can be pleased to accept and welcome the new kid on the block, V3, with all its improvements when they happen.

Avatar of playerafar

@camter  Again - you're not clear.
This time on what you mean by "to do so".
And no - one can't put anything in it one likes.
I have often commented about navigation in the forum Notes.
You already know you can address your "concerns" in the Notes -
with or without me there.  You're suggesting you didn't know that?  happy.png

Idea:  Say things you actually believe.
That works well for lots of people!
You can always try it out anytime.
But - fiction and pretense also have some good points ...
Anyway - you're now blocked.  And the rest of the "Fearless Six"
So if that works here -
perhaps there's some chance that member options will start getting discussed in this Club.
