Would Bughouse Be a Better Game with a 1 Second Delay?

I am of the opinion that, yes, it would be.

I think the worst part of the game is the heavy reliance on time.  Because it is easier to attack than defend, being up time means you can continue to spam pieces against your opponent.  A small difference in time can result in the other board having to sit.  On many occasions, my position went from fine to losing because I had to sit and by the time I could move, my opponent had an addition 5 droppers.

A 1-second delay should, in my belief, solve most of these issues.  The pace of the game slows down, which means that mindless aggression is less effective.  Furthermore, you no longer have the option to "flag" your opponent, which I always found to be an anticlimatic way to lose a chess game.  There is a reason why Blitz Tournaments do not play straight time.

IMPORTANT NOTE BELOW!!!!

I am talking about 1 second DELAY, not increment.  Not time is added to the clocks.  Delay means that some time (in this case, 1 second) before your time starts running.  This removes the incentive to move fast, since you can take the full second without losing time.

I am against this, as this would prevent stalling, which is part of the game.

yeah, I am also against this. it makes it more fun and it requires more skill and communication with your partner.

I am supporting this since people who aren't partners rarely communicate, and it is much too easy to attack than defend in the small amount of time.

A 1 second increment would make bughouse even more unbalanced toward attacking, which it already is. By playing a sequence of checks, a player gets uptime over their partopp who is sitting to avoid trades, and forces them to move. The game will be decided by cheesy sac-sits.

I don't like this. This just takes away from the element of bughouse, in my opinion. You have four people who want to do this, create a custom challenge with a custom time control. But this is a bad idea, in my opinion.

-1, time is part of game, this will also make games longer and waiting for new match will take more time. You could allow to do that only in private bughouse match where it would not mess up matchmaking for regular bughouse

0 because rounds would last longer, and players who don't talk and just speed through the games can just get more and more time instead, thus letting them farm time. However, it would be good to let both teammates have a bit more time to think together, which is why my rate is a 0 instead of -1.

I had that issue once... but then I found reliable partners and friended them so I could team up later. from there communication wasn't an issue, and games were still fun and exciting. also there was know blaming and name calling because you actually feel like a team. After I grew confidence through crazyhouse (you can play slower in that variant), returning to bughouse again I was equipped with new ideas and a better understanding of the patterns that can arise over the board.

I think there are strategies you can use to mitigate this 'problem' and I'm not sure this change would help anything

Yes like in 4pc

i am not with it as I think managing time is really an important part of bug. And also makes the outcome of the game very unpredictable and thus making it fun. Well there are some obvious minuses but more time i think makes the fun less.

Avatar of MessiKingdom

Well i would like to add something, if you are trying to make ur bug skills grow more time should be preferred but many players (including me) play it for fun.

It's an idea that needs testing. But I don't think we know exactly how it would pan out without tests.

It might be better. It might be worse. That depends on whether you want the games to take longer, and not have time play much of a role. Personally I think sitting is a very important part of the game, and the delay makes that less of an option.

A delay won't effect the game much as sitting still works. An increment would change the game ( see above), it should be an option if it currently isn't already.
