Basic principles of chess:

1) Control the center, either with your pawns or your pieces.

2) Develop your pieces, develop knights before bishops.

3) Ensure your king's safety.

4) Activate your pieces, in this case your rooks.

5) Connect your rooks, so that they can help/assist you in your future attacks.

Calculation Tips – Think Like a Grandmaster:

1) Use CCT – Checks, Captures, Threats

Always start by looking for forcing moves—those your opponent must respond to. These are:

This narrows down possibilities and helps you control the game tempo.

2) Always start by identifying forcing moves—checks, captures, and threats—especially those involving the most valuable pieces. Begin with the king: ask yourself if you can deliver a check, capture a piece or give threat to your opponent’s pieces or position and if there is such attacking ideas moves towards your Queen then Rook followed by your Knights Bishops and finally pawns. Because these are the moves that limit your opponent’s replies and help clarify the position faster plus this piece-by-piece approach ensures you don’t overlook surprising checks or captures from strong pieces.

3) Use the “candidate move” method: List 2–3 logical move options in any position. Don’t fixate on the first idea that comes to mind. This method opens your mind to multiple possibilities and avoids tunnel vision plus this structured approach helps avoid tactical oversights.

3) Calculate forcing lines first. Calculate the most forcing line first (where your opponent has the fewest replies). This often leads to clarity and fewer branches to calculate.

4) Don’t stop at your move—calculate opponent's best replies. After every move in your calculation, ask:

“What is the opponent’s best response?”

This helps you avoid traps and ensures your combination is sound.

5) Create problems for your opponent, even when you’re defending. Make moves that force them to spend time solving your ideas instead of executing their own.

6) Look for moves that create psychological pressure, such as threats that aren't immediately obvious but take time to address.

7) Counter attacking is the best attack, it is not necessary to react on your opponent's every move, instead you can counter attack and make them think in advance. To be successful at this, you have to master the art of counterattack. Don’t feel forced to react to every threat—instead, look for dynamic replies that shift the initiative of your game.

8) When trading, avoid making the first exchange unless it gains you something. Let your opponent take, so you control the resulting position. Avoid initiating exchanges unless you gain something (development, control, imbalance). Let your opponent take into you if it improves your position or saves a tempo. This is because if you trade or make a trade, you are simultaneously helping your opponent to develop a piece after the trade. Remember the adage: “To take is a mistake.”

9) Never help your opponent develop their pieces—make exchanges only if they weaken their coordination or structure. Avoid making trades or moves that improve your opponent’s piece activity or solve their problems. Be mindful of who benefits after the exchange.

10) Keep all your pieces defended—Undefended or “loose” pieces are magnets for tactics. Even if they aren't immediately under threat, they often become liabilities in future combinations. therefore often becoming tactical targets.

11) Instead of passive defense, look for tactics that flip the situation—discoveries, pins, forks, or attacking vulnerable squares. If a piece is attacked, instead of passively defending it, look for a stronger tactical idea that either saves the piece or creates a bigger threat (discovered attack, intermezzo, mating net).

12) Ask Yourself: “What Do I Want to Do?”. This is a mindset rule. Before calculating moves, ask yourself: “What do I want to achieve in this position?”. Whether it's attacking, defending, improving a piece, or stopping a plan—knowing your goal helps guide your calculation purposefully.

13) The “Quiet Move” Rule: Look Beyond Forcing Moves. Not every strong move is a check, capture, or threat. So keep in your consideration that not every strong move is a check or capture. Sometimes, a quiet repositioning or preparatory move is stronger because it sets up unstoppable threats or improves coordination. One of the most powerful (and often missed) concepts in calculation is the “quiet move”—a move that doesn’t immediately attack anything but sets up a deadly threat on the next turn or improves your position decisively. When players focus only on flashy moves (checks, captures), they often miss calm, preparatory moves that win positionally or tactically. These “hidden” moves are how masters outplay opponents without obvious fireworks. Some examples to clarify this hidden concept: A rook lift (like Rf3–g3) preparing a kingside attack, A bishop retreat (Be3–f2) to avoid a tactic and reroute, A pawn move (h3 or a4) to restrict or provoke weaknesses, King repositioning in an endgame (e.g., Kg2–f3) for key square access. So here is the thing don’t overlook “quiet moves” during calculation. Sometimes the strongest idea is not a check or capture, but a subtle repositioning or preparation that quietly improves your position or sets up an unstoppable threat.

14) “Compare Candidate Moves” Rule: Always Check More Than One Move. Don’t stop calculating after finding a good move. Look for a better one. One of the most common mistakes players make is calculating one promising move and immediately playing it. But strong players know that even if a move looks good, there might be another that’s stronger, more forcing, or more flexible. When you reach a position where you're about to make a move: Stop and identify 2–3 candidate moves. Briefly calculate each one to see how your opponent might respond. Then compare which move gives you the most control, threat, or positional gain. It helps avoid impulsive decisions. Trains your brain to think in branches, not straight lines. Develops strategic depth by weighing multiple ideas against each other. Often turns a good move into a great one. So always compare at least two or three candidate moves before deciding. Even if your first idea looks strong, forcing yourself to calculate and compare alternatives sharpens your decision-making and helps uncover better plans or tactics. This rule goes hand-in-hand with deepening your calculation and is one of the cornerstones of Grandmaster-level thinking.
