Can fine scratches be removed from a solid wood vintage chess board?

I'm looking to purchase a chessboard with a few scratches on the wood surface.

They don't seem to be too deep.

Does anyone have any tips on how to at least make them less noticeable?

The scratches look to be thru the finish and just touching the wood;

If not to deep , You can lightly sand ,  then polish & buff out !

When you say thru the finish - do you know what the finish is?  Is it varnish?  Would you be able to post some pictures here?
