I think this is a great event. This gives chess lovers (with money) to play and see super GM's and maybe even have drinks with them. Too bad I can't afford itYell.

I agree as it will be all about the money.

Hey who is watching the money i bet some guy steals the money out of the accounts to just make head lines. I bet it would be some tech guy stealing as he could not figure out how to use his tech to win the games.

If Carlsen signs in, will be there anybody else to join as well after that?

Anand will ........ to try to force the split of the money by draw.

I wouldn't be so sure... The result in the WCC wasn't a coincidence.

I hope that this tourney is a success and more players see the potential in having this made into an annual event.  This is big for the chess world and it will open up so many doors for sponsors and chess players.

I have my doubts that club players will want to shell out $1,000 but if there is anywhere in the world where this could work it must be the USA.

International participation by club class players seems unlikely as they would have to find the money for travel and accomodation as well as the stiff entry fee and I doubt that talented youngsters would have the cash. But that still leaves plenty of US coffee housers who might fancy a holiday in Las Vegas and the chance to play a little high stakes chess.

Good luck to it I say. If it became popular and was televised the prize money might become really worthwhile.

I'm only an average club player and I'm just excited to have a chance to play for these prizes.  The poker world has the WSOP, why can't we have our own World Series of Chess?

If you would be interested in my honest first impression as an unrated player for feedback,

I had considered it until I saw unrated players were forced to play in the open section.

So someone who doesn't even have a rating yet is thrown into the deep end with all the high rated sharks on their very first rated event?

Why not under 1000 since they don't even have that as a rating yet?

Let me guess. Probably because they know someone like me would come in and get the top spot for my section even if it's the first rated event I ever played.

So what's wrong with that?

Nothing.

In fact, that would be a contributing reason as to why I'd pay to play.

But if you stack the deck against me before I even have a chance at my first rated event, then forget about my $1000.

No loss to you I'm sure as there will be several titled players happy to pay for the shot at the prize, but it seems to punish those without a rating from the very beginning.

Until I read what they did to all unrated players, my eyes lit up with excitement at the possibility at a fair shot.

Make up your mind.  A fair shot is letting you win some unrated section?

learningthemoves

Hey little buddy, nothing wavered about my mind.

I don't appreciate your little jab/attitude.

Don't you have a woman grand master to hate on or something?

It wouldn't be unfair if I won an unrated section because I am unrated.

And no one would "let" me, I'd still have to win.

Which is why I highlighted to help you.

An experienced yet unrated player winning their section isn't fair either.  You say nothing's wrong only so long as you're winning money.  It's silly.

learningthemoves

I'm not experienced though. I've never played over the board at a rated event. Nothing's silly when it comes to playing with my money. Don't get funny with my money as that would be the only thing silly.

Bulla

I agree it is a little unfair, but it was necessary to prevent cheating.  I also don't feel like this event is geared towards unrated players.  I know for myself, I would never risk $1000 in my very first tournament even if I was able to play in an unrated section.

waffllemaster

It's like that in most tournaments... unrated players can't come in and suck the money out.  This contributes to regulars participating.

waffllemaster

The scary unrated players are people who come over form Europe, have some 2300 FIDE rating, but no USCF rating, and face mostly beginners (that's no fair).

learningthemoves

Yeah, I do see the logic of the anti-unrated player. Just saying as an unrated player who would otherwise play, it kind of sucks. And again, I just shared that honest viewpoint if someone was interested in the initial impression for feedback from an unrated player.

Take it or leave it. It's up to you if you want to try to persuade me to see it from some other angle or something, but that would be a waste of time, because as I said, that was my intitial impression as an unrated player and I offered it as feedback.
