Denmark finished 25 places higher than their start rank and looks like its gonna be hard to beat that and I noticed that Bulgaria finished more than 25 places lower than their start rank..... very bad Olympiad for the Bulgarians..... but a very good one for Denmark !

Take a look at Zambia who finished in 47th.Tongue out

no you're right Nick, neither one of them made respective top 20 lists. I hope Norway is not too depressed about it

ChessMarkstheSpot

Zambia? I have to look on a world map to find that...I thought I knew my geography

gorgeous_vulture

I've recently started working with a coach, who's originally from Zimbabwe (he just made IM). He said that the only GM from sub-Saharan Africa is Zambian (I think his name may be Rupiah)

ChessMarkstheSpot

Oh yeah..Zambia

TheOldReb

WOW !!  Zambia finished 74 places higher than their start rank !  Ok, they are the team to beat now. ( have they been checked for doping ? )  Smile

ChessMarkstheSpot

LMAO Reb!!!  HGH perhaps? everyone else is doin it

EDIT: Since Ukraine gained independance after communism feel in Russia, wouldn't Ukraine still technically BE Russia?!?  LOL

I think Rp = rating performance ?  I am not sure though and have no idea what Rc is.....

I think this is a bad way of deciding which countries did the best. Denmark played a miserable first half (and more) tourney. They did so badly, that in the last 3 rounds, they only met teams rated way below them.

Overall they lost 13 ratingpoints and in the whole tourney, they only won against 1 GM (and the have 2 GMs on the team themselves).

But of course all people see, is the number in the end...

Nope, Norway's not too depressed about it. We are all looking forward to the Olympiad 2014, hoping that we will have five teams as well ;) I have already made plans that I'm playing table 1 on Norway 2 - let's see in four years if it turns out true :)

No, seriously, Norway is of course disappointed, especially by the placement in the end. But besides Magnus, the rest of the team actually did what they were supposed to. Frode Urkedal is very young, and improved a lot during the tourney. If he had played more rounds, he would have gotten a GM norm. Hammer played all 11 games - how many else did that in the whole Olympiad? Too bad he lost the last round, because if he hadn't he would have had a good result.

I am disappointed by Norway's other GMs though, turning down such an event. Whenever you get a chance to play on the same team as Magnus, you should definitely say yes! I have nothing against Frode U or Torbjørn, but they should not have been on the team. A Norway with only GMs or only above 2500, and topped with Carlsen and Hammer - see, that would have been frightening!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading all this, and Reb's comment about Zambia being checked for doping! LMAO!!!!

I wonder if Magnus also felt disappointed in his countrymen for not showing up to play. A large part of Magnus success has been how hard he fights over-the-board, the energy he puts into each game. I bet it's not as easy to summon the determination and energy for that when you're not in a good position to win because you're not getting the support from the bottom end of your team.

The Grandmaster from Zambia is Amon Simutowe.

Although Simutowe did not play this time (so it is an even better performance by the team)
