The Block Bypass Thread!

I didn't even know blocking applied to games, thought it was communication (chats, messages, forums..etc).

I’ve blocked six or seven people due to threads. A few more earned temporary blocks. For instance, one forum genius (his term for himself) had to be blocked to stop the PMs.

I’ve blocked hundreds of chess opponents because they seems suspicious, or they couldn’t take no for an answer when they wanted a second game, or because they were abusive, or, …

Sometimes I review my massive blocked list and find most of them are no longer in the site. I take their absence to be confirmation that many were nefarious.

No I understand, I was just saying I didn't even know you could block people from being an opponent in live chess, thought it just prevented communication between the members in question.

I just blocked a member. New reason. Sent me a friend request. We have not played, do not know each other in real life, and have not interacted in the forums. After I refused, he sent another. I refused and sent a message, “have we interacted?” The only response was a third friend request. That’s when I blocked.

I do not accept random friend requests. If we are friends on this site, there has been some prior communication or interaction.

That's a ridiculous reason to block lol, now he couldn't explain even if he wanted to. Did you consider maybe it was just the notifications malfunctioning. I've had that happen many times, a friend request coming for a few days later even after I already accepted it, or saying "club has a new note" even if I already checked it. Jeez.

I agree on the no blocking. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion, if someone is actually being toxic and trolling then chess.com will deal with it lol is my take. I do not plan to ever block someone

Ahh, the illusions of the newly minted happy.png. People block because chess.com will *not* deal with it. I admire the hopeful outlook, though.

There are people that send repeated friend requests just to pester/annoy people they don't like.

On any website, for any allowed method of contact, abuse is possible. That's why passive and automated measures alone can never work. Active moderation is a requirement.

How is that annoying? 1 extra notification a day? At one point I had 70 notification it's not a big deal.

A friend request every day (or more than once a day) for 8 months straight? You wouldn't find that annoying?

EndgameEnthusiast2357

If it's just the same notification and not a list of 1,000 notifications for the same request, no.

So, you must love junk mail, then.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

Notifications on this site are nothing. You should see the type of stuff I get in my email spam, and that's over 100 per day.

Ethan_Brollier

I probably have a few hundred people actively blocked rn. Anyone who runs out the clock in an game against me rather than playing on or resigning gets insta-blocked and reported. It happens a lot more than you’d expect unfortunately.

You're purportedly 23. How many man-months of your life would you guesstimate you will have wasted clearing unneeded or unwanted notifications in your life by the end of it? Just something to ponder.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

Uh about 5 seconds a day 3 times a day?

I'm honestly sick of people whining about this. When you start a game, both you and your opponent have the right to use up all your time, wait 30 seconds before making the only legal king move, not resign when a your opponent has 2 queens, and the winning side also has the right to promote their pawns to a knight and bishop for fun if they want. I've even suggested things like "trigger moves" where the site could implement a setting to automatically play the move if it's the only legal move available, but people said that would be impractical and confusing.

So over 6 man-months, even assuming you die a few years early at 73. Actually, that would include sleeping time, so in practical terms, 9.5 man-months.

The notification was gone after each denial. He certainly sent it repeatedly.

First of all, no, we don’t have the right, this site literally has sportsmanship rules against that. Second, even if we did have the right, that’s the same as saying someone has the right to scream directly into your ear. You aren’t wrong, but it’s undeniably cruel and spiteful.
Third, I have no problem with people who play the game out until checkmate. I actually really appreciate them because 1) it’s more satisfying and fun to checkmate someone than for them to resign, and 2) I’m learning how to play winning endgames more effectively. It’s the people who drop a knight 30 seconds in and stall 2 1/2 minutes until they lose by timeout that I take issue with. Neither of us is having fun, neither of us are learning, and neither of us is allowed to leave either.

Even gothamchess says you do. Maybe they had to go, or thought it would auto resign when they logged off. It's not that deep. Just be patient and wait the 2 minutes. I only play blitz and bullet and I know I have to set aside the full 5 minutes just in case. You may be able to report it but that is just like calling 311 in NYC, it doesn't end up achieving anything. 90% of cheaters get away, how are they supposed to determine why someone abandoned a game. Grow up.

So just accept it then. Problem solved.
