ANTI-SPAM FORUM

I updated the definition a bit, I think that's a pretty accurate description of spam.

Unsolicited messages, usually of witless, immaterial or commercial nature, sent to a large number of recipients or posted in a large number of places with the purpose of drawing attention or causing disruption.

What a waste thread, mrbereobonb is right, saying hi randomly in a forum is spam, there is no need to say it, so why say it, also the I don’t like you so you are a troll mentality is pretty dumb

Exactly. This is what I find the most annoying about OP's argument. It's like disregarding someone's opinion on how a president runs their country simply because they haven't been a president before.

chat is not private. in can be, but i mean the live stream chess.com chat or the live chess chat

Wow, someone has some brains. @ChessTitan, you're being pretty hypocritical right now.

hey, that guy is my friend. if saying hi in a forum, thread, or chat is spam, that means thousands of people  including myself would be banned on a daily basis

Posting "hi" in one topic, shouldn't be considered spam, I may have misinterpreted the earlier message. I think intent is also a factor here. Was that message meant to disrupt or otherwise of malicious intent, or was it just a harmless greeting?

I thought it was suggested that you posted "hi" in multiple topics, at the same time, which most certainly fits the description of spam.

okay, i will be respectful about this.  my friend said  hi to me. how is that bad? he said hi to ME. no one else. and i don't don't like anyone, but i know a troll when i see one. you think my argument is dumb? why?

I disagree; spam in my definition includes irrelevant posts. Simply saying "hi" in a thread about spam is not relevant in my opinion.

it was an act of recognition

hi chesstitan006

Stuff like this I consider spam.

You may consider that spamming because it's off-topic but you have to have some way to greet someone. happy.png

saying hi shows that you are open for conversation to your friends, and is a valuable bridgeway to start a conversation

hey, i am not syaing that he is immune to the chess.com rules. why would i think that?! he just said hi, and since that isn't spamming, he's ok. even if someone random says hi to me, I'd be like, who are you? but i wouldn't still consider that spamming. Greeting is allowed

king2f8

yes

EscherehcsE

A singular "Hi" might not necessarily be spam, but it does strike me as a bit awkward and maybe a bit irritating. It's sort of like if you went to the trouble of walking out of your house to flag down a passing friend, tell him "Hi", then walk back into your house. One would think that you might have something more to add to the conversation.

Fidd_1

How did this "hi" thing all the sudden become spamming? Spamming can be something off-topic but it's a more acceptable version of it. "Hi" is part of the English language to greet others.

king2f8

how did that happen

umm..........exactly. saying hi means that you are simply greeting them, or it means that you want to talk. is there anything wrong with that? And by the way, that analogy wasn't realistic. this is online, not pyshical.
