They went back and fixed the puzzle!
It now works, but weird to fix it 17 years later

So, I guess the Queen, rooks and pawn were just misplaced.

I don't understand how they came up with this as their first ever daily puzzle. Maybe chess.com was so poor back then that they didn't even have engines, but whatever. It is the first ever daily puzzle. So can't say too much.
