Why? Because if you win more, you will play harder opponents and eventually you will lose and come to your long term average. Naka will have a high win% because nobody is above him.
Rating takes into account quality of competition, so one win against a much higher opponent vs two losses against a much higher opponent might actually be a net positive.
Does that help?
I’ve been playing on chess.com for several years now. I just play because I enjoy the game. I’m not great but I play a decent game. I have always had a win/loss/draw rating of about 47% wins 46% losses and 7% draws. That is a pretty high draw rate. But I have always had a few more wins than losses for several years. Recently though I have been losing about 2 or 3 games for every win and my win/loss % has gone way down. My rating is still pretty consistent - Mid 1300-1400. My average opponent rating is still consistent. If anything it has gone up. My percentile is consistent. I just can’t figure out why I am having such a hard time winning all the sudden. It feels like my opponents are getting tougher in just the last couple of months. Any thoughts?
