Thanks for the replies - all that makes sense.
You don't have to bring your own set to tournaments or matches in the UK, you're usually playing on one of those nasty plastic sets with a nasty vinyl board. So it might make sense to buy a similar nasty set and board for home use to get used to the nastiness.
