1963-1966 The Piatigorsky Cup Chess Set

My Piatigorsky Cup Chess Set arrived today from the Official Staunton Chess Company. The set is simply amazing and words can not express how beautiful this set really is. So I have supplied many pictures to do my talikng.  Kings measure 4.4" in height with a diameter base of just over 1.75". The set is extremely  heavy and is at least TRIPLE WEIGHTED. It gets my vote for chess set of the year. The one piece Knights our especially pleasing. They are  unique in that each  side of the Knight's mane is carved diiferently. I can't imagine the extra time it took the carver(s) to make each intricate detailed Knight. The finely turned pieces are exquisite, but I would like to see the Bishops with a thicker shaft and slightly larger bulbous head.  I want to thank Carl again for making this magnificent reproduction set possible for collectors.

Gorgeous set of enormous historical significance. Another interesting thing about the knights is that they're carved in one piece. Any idea when this set will be generally available? It's still listed as pre-order on the OS website.

And, of course, many thanks to you, Mike, for all you did to bring this set to life again.

Thanks Chuck for your interetsing points. Maybe Carl can chime in with an estimate of when the set will be available.

You're welcome Chuck, but all the credit goes to Carl bringing my dream set into fruition.

Really nice looking. The knights are so unusual, and beautiful.

As WiscMike said, it doesn't get any better than playing over games in the Piatigorsky Cup Tournamnet books with the Piatigorsky Cup Set. I have to agree!

Can you tell us the backstory of you and how you learned of this set and convinced Carl to make it? I think that would be interesting to hear the details. It sounds like you've told it before, but I think it would make a great value add to this stunning post from you.

Really cool set. I am a fan!
