You might have a better chance of selling the items if you posted photos of the sets here.

I note that the pictures on the auction site appear unfocused.

I see that clicking on the photos brings you to a higher resolution image but can't believe your first image can't be much higher quality.

You are probably right. Unfortunately I do not have the sets in my possession anymore so I can not take pics. Doug does have a website though so you can see how  beautiful they are..

He has chess sets in the Chess Set hall of fame and in my opinion the best chess set artist there is. These four are vintage pieces that usually sell when you can find them for between 6-12k each.

Matthew4281

it is called art no different then jon company sets that fetch 6 figures.

Matthew4281

jon company sets from 1830 are the best ever made. Also these Doug Anderson sets take years to make and are made from scratch but we do not have to go back and forth with this mishagas anymore, lol

Presumably you mean "John" company sets i.e. East India company sets? As I understand these were primarily made of ivory so would be difficult to sell today. Can you point us to any examples of Doug Anderson sets selling for $6k-$12k and to the examples in a chess set hall of fame? thanks

Matthew4281

True but I still feel the are the creme de la creme so to speak of chess sets. As for Doug Anderson here is the link for the set in the Hall of Fame

https://worldchesshof.org/exhibit/everybody%E2%80%99s-game-chess-popular-culture

and here is a recent sale in sothebys not including the vig

http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/creating-a-stage-collection-of-marsha-and-robin-williams-n09977/lot.261.html

Also he recently launched a website here..

http://www.dadesignsf.com/

He has been making them for decades but the vintage ones like mine are rarely in mint condition and he charges 6-10k for new sets which take up to 6 months to complete.

Interesting. Although the set is being displayed at the Hall of Fame (along with Lego sets, Super Mario sets, Simpsons sets etc.) not exactly the same as being "in" the Hall of fame.

The set that sold for $6k was from the collection of Robin Williams? Could this have affected the value?

Matthew4281

With the vig it was over 7k. Also that set is in the Hall of fame. There was an auction for a crooners vs symphony set on ebay months back that sold for almost 9k. Take my word for it if you must

You can also see that he frequently sets up the board the wrong way round.

I think they're great sculptures but they look all wrong when you put them on a chess board, especially when the board is for too small for the pieces

IpswichMatt

Are they correct to say that's 1870? I don't know much about the ivory sets but I thought only the really early sets (1849-50 or so) had the registered numbers?

interesting, i'd never heard of doug anderson or john company. i collect art and chess sets. of course it's personal taste but i am surprised either of them have a following.

Not to offend anyone I can only see this as a display set and it's tough for me to even call it vfc that.  As an art piece I differ to those more knowledgeable than I but as far as chess I see no chess functionality in these sculptures.

Another site has much better pictures of one of the sets.

Very rare limited edition.

That's more like it! It even comes in it's own fitted coffer (or should that be called a sarcophagus?)

@Haverumwilltravel , you joke but I bought that set over 10 years ago and it helped get my nephew into chess where he is now a solid 1700 USCF.
