Another one: Chavet Pieces?

Avatar of Uchebuike

Hello guys,

I recently added some "German Knight" Pieces to my collection, since I love their simplicity and sturdiness. Because of that I eventually came across various Chavet Pieces and find them to be absolutely beautiful.

So yesterday I got the opportunity to acquire some pieces, which very much look like Chavets to me, but I'm not sure. I already looked up the Chavet guide, but couldn't come to a conclusion by myself.

Could you help me to get some information about the following pieces?

Edit: the guy who sold them to me (for 60€) told me, that his grandfather probably bought them at around 1970.

Yes it certainly looks like a Chavet. Everything from the low flat bases of the pawns, the tulip bulb bishops, the small nipple Queen and the slightly round arch of the King’s cross. The King of Chavet was in a few styles. One exactly like a 1970 Lardy, the other with a harder triangular cut and small raised cross and one in your picture. Your Knights also look accurate. The most common are the eyeless which are spectacular, but the varied Chavet knights all had the same chest at least. Looks beautiful, congrats. :)

Yeah, beautiful size 5 Chavet. Are there any markings or numbers on the bottom of the box?

Thanks! @GreyStoic I didn't have my hands on them yet, since they will arrive tomorrow. I'm going to post it as soon as I got them. @Audioq

Chavet or not it's a beautiful set. Congrats!

Undoubtedly. But correct me if I'm wrong, I thought no. 5 refers to a kings height of 88mm? This one seems to be at least 93mm high.

I also think this will be a n) 6. Ask Ronbo710 ... he's the expert on Chavet sets.

Interesting to know what size the rest of the pieces are, particularly the pawns. Size 5 pawns were approx 45mm and size 6 approx 50mm for most of those Jura sets.

But you are correct in saying 93mm is more like a size 6 size king. If so it will be the first time I have ever seen this style in size 6. That is quite an old set and seems to have the one piece hand carved knights. At that time the size 6 was 95mm. The size 6 later went to 92/93mm and the size 5 to 90. Really interested to know about this. Great find either way. Any thoughts Ronbo710?

Thanks @Audioq

@Shulerstack has some nice pieces which seem very close to these. I don´t know their size however. Ronbos thoughts really would be interesting to know.

These are his (@Shulerstack) beautiful pieces:

It's really interesting that the style of your pieces are almost exactly the same as this set, with the exception that the set below has two piece knights and the Kings are 89mm, so definitely a size 5. But the rest of the pieces look identical, right down to the rounded button on top of the bishop.

Nice looking pieces. I like the color and grain. Great snag U. The price was right.

@crusaderwabbet I appreciate it.

@Audioq Indeed. To which set do they belong? A Lardy?

Avatar of Ronbo710

I think it a nice early example just as Audioq stated. I have an early natural and red stain 94mm King version with shorter knight snouts like this. And the slightly convex queen crown on top.

Thanks for the input Ronbo, everyone!

I am going to take some pictures when they arrive (not the best quality though).

Great set by the way. I love the finish.

I don't know if they are Lardy, Chavet, Roz or other. In the absence of markings I'll just call them a Jura set.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that your set is actually 89mm and the angle of the ruler/camera and the fact that it is behind the piece makes it look like it is 93mm. I just tried that with a piece that measures 89mm with an electronic callipers 😁. Sorry, I'm a bit bored today!

My favorite stain color for Black. Love, Love that dark red color. Reminds me of finely aged Cherry. Thanks for sharing your Chavet with us.

You were actually right. The guy who sold them didn´t get the angle right...should have thought about that when I bought them...

Here are the detailed measurments:

King: 89 mm (Height) / 35 mm (Diameter)

Queen: 75 mm / 35 mm

Rook: 50 mm / 28 mm

Knight: 61 mm / 33 mm

Bishop: 64 mm / 31 mm

Pawn: 45 mm / 26 mm

The pieces are in stellar condition I think. Here are some pictures (also in comparison to my German Knight Set with a kings height of 95mm). On a 55 mm Walnut/Maple Board and a 58 mm Mahagoni/Maple Board. How do you think do they fit on each board? I´d love them to be 95 mm in height.

Chavet pieces are so much more refined. Never been a fan of the German Knight in that set although I have see German made Staunton sets that have Knights closer to the Chavet. I especially like the more rare German Chavet style Knights that have glass eyes.
