Austin 1962 Chess Set with wooden case

Hello,

I got this Austin Enterprises set at an estate sale in Delaware for $20 many years ago. More recently I’ve been going through old collectibles and listing them on EBay when I saw the same item listed for $2000? It’s a nice set but I could use the money. Does anyone have any experience selling high value sets like this? Is it worth it? Should I be going through a different channel since eBay takes a hefty fee which adds up on expensive items.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nice score for $20. Do an eBay search and filter for sold listings. That should tell you all you need to know about price. Do you have the board? If not, that and case condition should be factored in. eBay works fine for items like this. This is more of a home decor/functional sculpture piece. Your audience is probably not chess enthusiasts or collectors as much as someone wanting a unique game set to decorate a home.

I had suspected it might be more of a decor item than for chess enthusiasts so I appreciate you confirming my bias haha. I kept it hanging on the wall for years before buying my house, and only ever used the pieces once or twice to play a game. They are not super satisfying to the touch and are harder to tell the board state at a glance. My go-to has always been a smaller stone set with a matching board that my uncle bought in Mexico. Smooth, polished, easy to move pieces and a good weight, but I digress. Thanks for the insight!
