There was a post on this same subject just a couple of days ago.

Anways, I would recommend learning tactics first.

I'd try Ward Farnsworth's Predator at the Chessboard. He has alot of examples and is very thorough in his explanations. The book is available online at chesstactics.org.

Tactics. If you're willing to spring for books a couple choices more basic than Predator at the Chessboard are Heisman's Back to Basics: Tactics, Seirawan's Winning Chess Tactics, and Chandler's How to Beat Your Dad at Chess.

Also, learn must-know endgames like checkmating with a queen and/or rook (see here), and basic opening principles (see here). Good luck and have fun!

(Of course, don't forget to check out the resources on chess.com like the Tactics Trainer, Chess Mentor, mentoring, study groups, the forums for asking questions, etc...)

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, Beginning Chess by Pandolfini, and Chess 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games by Laszlo Polgar and all very good books. The Fischer and Pandolfini are good starter books in my opinion - for endgame work. Learn the Ruy Lopez opening and go from there.
