Just wanted to throw in my recommendation. To be totally honest, I didn't read through the rest of this forum. Based solely on my own personal experience too, not a book that I just researched and threw out there, I highly recommend the book Complete Chess Workout. It's a tactics book, but there's 1200 of them and you'll quickly see them coming into your game. I think it's very underrated, and leads to very fast improvement. I only started playing 3 and a half years ago, and that book helped me a lot. I just perused some of these other recommendations, Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual?! Far too advanced, certainly not just beginner basics, and rather useless if your tactics aren't good. You can look at my rating history, and see 3 years ago my blitz rating was 700, so I hope you'll trust that I know about improving and I hope this helps
