Best book for beginners?

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a book that would help me improve my chess skills. Right now my rating is around 1150, so I think you could say I am a beginner. I have been playing for a couple of years, I know the rules, and I also know some tactics (I know what a fork, a pin and a skewer are) but my skills don't seem to improve much (not fast enough anyway).

What book would you recommend for me to get? Hopefully something that would be appropriate for my level and that will get me some time to study/master. Also I'm not yet familiar with descriptive nor algeabric notation but I am ready to learn.

Thanks in advance!

Get familar with both types of notation because algebraic is mandatory now but english notation is handy for reading older books never "translated" to AN and it gives you the option of buying used copies in EN cheaper than brand new ones in AN in some cases.

Look for used copies of books at amazon whenever possible. Try reading one of the following for starters

"Logical Chess Move By Move" by Irving Chernev

"Common Sense In Chess" by Dr Lasker

"Masters of the Chessboard" by Richard Reti

Bobby Fischer's My Best 60 Games. This is coming from a beginner and I love it. Tactics, strategy, endgame, openings all in one. I have just come to discover that studying classic games as a beginner is the quickest way to develop as a player. If you don't understand something, mark it down and ask here.

Best,

Just ordered Bobby Fischer's book (the title was actually My 60 Memorable Games), as well as "Common Sense In Chess" (it was cheaper than the other two as well as being hardcover). Will look into these two as soon as I get them. Thanks a lot!

Yeah the man was guru with e4 openings.

Max Euwe's book is great and it is the book I would recommend to folks who are interested in taking their first step into chess.

royalbishop

Yeah, keep hearing about this book.

I think that the best book for a chess begginer is Wepons of chess by NM Bruce Pandolfini is the best book for begginers or, just get a better membership and try to learn some thing from the video lessons in learn section.

The two books I ordered should keep me busy for some time, but I will take a look at the other suggestions once I am done with them. Thank you very much to all of you for the advice!
