Get familar with both types of notation because algebraic is mandatory now but english notation is handy for reading older books never "translated" to AN and it gives you the option of buying used copies in EN cheaper than brand new ones in AN in some cases.
Look for used copies of books at amazon whenever possible. Try reading one of the following for starters
"Logical Chess Move By Move" by Irving Chernev
"Common Sense In Chess" by Dr Lasker
"Masters of the Chessboard" by Richard Reti
Hello everyone,
I am looking for a book that would help me improve my chess skills. Right now my rating is around 1150, so I think you could say I am a beginner. I have been playing for a couple of years, I know the rules, and I also know some tactics (I know what a fork, a pin and a skewer are) but my skills don't seem to improve much (not fast enough anyway).
What book would you recommend for me to get? Hopefully something that would be appropriate for my level and that will get me some time to study/master. Also I'm not yet familiar with descriptive nor algeabric notation but I am ready to learn.
Thanks in advance!
