No offence, but with your rating opening books is the last thing you need to read. Look at some books of chess fundamentals first.

For beginner Sam Collins Understanding the chess openings could be interesting. Most common chess openings are explained on 220 pages, main lines, 8 to 16 moves. You can peak inside in several book stores.

I like Discovering Chess Openings by John Emms. I really liked the first few chapters where he focused more about general principles of openings. He went into more specific openings in the last few chapters which was also good as well.

I agree  Understanding Chess Openings by Sam Collins is a great book. You can rapidly get the feel of an opening by reading the chapter. Wish I still had mine : sent it to my grandsons.

I'll second this recommendation! It was recommended to me here recently and I really like it. I'm making my way through the fifth chapter now, and my play has already improved a lot, mainly from not making silly, basic errors that were just killin' me.
