Btw,those 2 sets mentioned in thread #81 are very nice....but....in the price range of an NOJ.

Hello again!

That is nice. Thanks for posting it. The Trio pieces from chessafrica.co.za are unobtainable because this company doesn't bother to reply to any form of solicitation. It is amazing how arrogant many chess supply stores have become while they enjoy the financial windfall won 'The Queens Gambit' being shown on Netflix. I did find several other sets on chessbazzar.com Here are just a few, but there are many more:

I seem to be shifting in my thinking. The Attica set posted by Lou is growing on me (and the price is right). Usually I find that I miss a strong finial cross on the king, or suffiiently numerous or distinct and marked crenellations on a rook, when I choose, as do many people,  according to the detail of the knight; which creates a set of problems all its own. Their is a dignity to the knight of the Attica set too; and I fear that many of the prettier options may, over time, grow...comical. Additionally, I'm trying to decide if I prefer a thick or a thin torus (the cushion base beneath the character) and multiple plinths (the final resting support of the piece). The Attica has a low torus (cushion), which I thought I didn't like, but now I'm not so sure. Further, I think I need something other than black for dark, for reasons that I will explain in my new post. I'm going to start a new thread to get your opinions on matter concerning how a side 'plays' from the conventional seated position, and other matters which have only lately presented themselves to me as being relevant and significant, and which you have all likely already considered with regards to your own preference for pieces. Not the least of which is that new players, or 'preferred' players, may necessitate a new board too.  I'll link it to this. Thanks for you help so far!

Here's another set I find unusually well designed. And as crosses go this one is one of the best I've seen. Of course the price is something else as well at $2,200.

Speed chess might be a challenge.

I highly recommend the Attica in the padauk finish. It looks great. Unlike ebony, you can actually see the detail in this finish. And it will fit equally as well on a 2.375" or a 2.5" chessboard.

Attica is a handsome set for sure. Good price as well. Here's the ebony version which I still like better but you're right about seeing the detail.

TheOneCalledMichael

For me it would be this German design, clean and robust design.

I've played with black chess sets for over 50 years. About 5 years ago I decided it was time for a change. Out of the 21 sets I currently own, only three have black pieces, one ebony, one ebonized, and one plastic. Other finishes include 4 Padauk, 5 Sheesham, 1 rosewood, 1 acacia, 2 gilded mahogany, and 2 red lacquer. As they say, "variety is the spice of life."

Honestly, I find the notion to proclaim a single style of chess pieces "perfect" to be positively ludicrous. To each their own.

Maybe, even that one. Eyechess's motivation was of course to once again butter up NOJ, more so than the original creator of the Dubrovnik set. Just because Bobby Fischer, a brilliant player but also a left-handed monkey wrench even during the best of times, declared one the best of them all, in reality, doesn't mean anything.

Thank you for your positivity, sound67 (yes, this is sarcasm).

I really do not need or look forward to buying anymore Chess sets as I definitely own more than enough.  So I am certainly not trying to butter anyone up, even you, you schmuck.

And if you do not agree with the humorous intent to name a perfect design, stay out of it and post nothing.

Eyechess

And, you yellow livered carcass of a man, I started this topic in April of 2017.  That is well over 3 1/2 years ago.

By the way, I have never ever buttered up anyone.  My wife has pointed out, many times over the last 41 years of our marriage, that I am blunt and certainly not a diplomat or politician.

And, you German weasel, if you look at my opening post you will see I had 2 of my favorites listed with one being an Official Staunton Leuchars set that was knowingly made in India.

So cut it out.  Stop trying to insult and attack me.  I will not take it, you negative Norman.

KnightsForkCafe

Best Chess Set Design is subjective. What one person thinks is the best. The other person thinks it's the worst. So I don't really get into this kind of debate. For me the design style I like the most is a hybrid of western and eastern design. Bishops with solid heads with opposite colored ball finials. Traditional cross King's finial. Romanian/Hungarian set is an example of this style I like the most. Dragon head Knights Bohemia set is another one.

Eyechess

And the fact is, sound67, you do not know or understand Chess sets well enough to be able to identify Chess set perfection or not.

You have come on this forum completely biased against any person or company offering a set at what you think is too expensive.  I am sure you have never handled, let alone owned a high quality set.  You only want the cheap stuff.
Noj is not the only company or person producing high quality Chess sets, you schmuck.

Carl of Official Staunton, Frank Camaratta who started and sold The House of Staunton, Chess Empire and Chopra are a few others.

I only own 6 Noj sets.  And I own at least 36 others made in India.  So what you Chess set expert wannabe?

If you didn’t figure it out I am tired and done with you and your low priced buddy, KnightsForkCafe, taking shots at me and others because we like high quality stuff.  Enough is enough.
I declare war on you and him.  You are both Chess set and equipment degenerates.

Be assured that I will no longer suffer you and him as the fools you are.
