Best Chess Set Design is subjective. What one person thinks is the best. The other person thinks it's the worst. So I don't really get into this kind of debate. For me the design style I like the most is a hybrid of western and eastern design. Bishops with solid heads with opposite colored ball finials. Traditional cross King's finial. Romanian/Hungarian set is an example of this style I like the most. Dragon head Knights Bohemia set is another one.

I am sorry, you idiot.  I did not start this topic asking what you liked.  It asks for the perfect design.  And this is something you cannot know in your ignorance.

I started this topic before you and a limited number of others came to this forum trying to make low cost as the main criteria for a good Chess set.

As I have said many times before, the price of the set does not come into the decision if it is a good set.

I have some lower priced sets from Chess Bazaar and House of Staunton that are very nice.  I have bought some sets and handled some that were higher priced and not nice.  I have sold or given away the sets that are not nice.

Unless you admit that some of the higher quality sets, that also cost more, are better, you have no right giving your opinion.  Yes, these sets come from Noj, House of Staunton, Official Chess Company, Chess Empire, Chopra and a few others.

And note that I have not and will not block you or that German schlock from posting in my topics, as you have blocked me you spineless wonder.

Yeah, when you cannot provide actual logic or evidence, name call.  You are obviously an uneducated, illiterate buffoon.

You obviously do not know the definition of words, like snob.

Someone who thinks that he needs to stick up his nose at budget minded players is such an unattractive behavior. So what if someone thinks more about the cost above everything else. I get so tired of banging on this drum with you. We are in a global market and direct Indian makers is changing the competition. Retailers are no longer the only venue available to the public. I truly don't get why you think that it's your life mission to be so focused on chess sets. Seems like your chess set crusade is such a small mission compared to what just happened in our election and how much we are loosing our liberties in America.

Ok then.... Late to the party. Good to see everyone gets along in the chess world!
I’ve returned to the game (yes me too, embarrassingly, because of the Netflix show...)
The last chess match I played was against my Kasparov 16k travel computer in 1985... which I dug out of a box in the basement, and put in new batteries ... and it still works. And still beats me on level 1......
Since following this site for the last month I’ve bought a Centaur and some triple weighted plastic pieces and a couple boards and books.....I’m addicted.

I’m looking for a really well made German knight set in Ebony with a 3.5 or 3.75” king. I prefer this simple classic beautiful set. But I can’t find a really good example of it. Rough carves. Wobbly bottoms. Not enough weight.... Occasionally black but it’s stained boxwood... the dgt non-e don’t come in black ...

Is there an Noj or high end version of the German knight set anyone is aware of?

Thanks in advance for the suggestion.

@onthebeach3141 Usually the German Knight set is in Sheesham, Ebonized Boxwood, maybe lucky to get it in Rosewood. If you would want Ebony German Knight set. May have to contact an Indian company to get Ebony made set.

Eyechess

Actually, you are the small minded one so focused on Chess sets.

I never have stuck up my nose at anyone, even small minded idiots like you.

And what does the results of the past election have to do with this?  If you are so concerned with the political and liberties scene, you should leave here and fix it all, you moron.

This is a Chess Equipment discussion forum.  If you don’t like the facts presented, quit coming here.
The vast majority of the sets I own cost well under $150.  And I have pointed these out over the years here as being a great value.  Where were you during this, you imbecile?

RichColorado

I purchased this at the height of me being a chess fanatic . . .

That was 57 years ago but to this day i have not put legs on it . . .

I had it mounted on wood around 1990 . .

I'm now 83 and don't know what will happen to it when i go to the chess heaven in the sky. . .

In 1960 i also bought a chess set in a fake leather box that the pieces were red & white. It was being liquidated in a store that was closing called the White House in San Francisco. I played many , many games with it. But to my demise i don't know what happened to it. . .

Someone who thinks that HoS and NOJ is the cat's meow and Indian made sets are junk. Is the one who is small minded. Since Indian companies make sets for retailers. I bypass retailers if I can get the same or similar set from direct. So you judge me and sound67 for doing this is shameful. So what business is yours if we go this route? Not like these sets are being placed in extreme stress loads. I don't think that a few ounces or a slight carving variation is worth $100's more than direct. You are paying for the retailer's profit and not the quality. Retailers actually have nothing do about quality. Most of the sets I have gotten from retail. Has been the worst sets in quality. House of Chess and Royal Chess Mall has given me better quality with less costs. My experiences is why I go direct. The only time I go through retail. Is if there is a set I can't get direct. Calling me a degenerate doesn't bother me. Your opinion has no power over my life. I just don't subscribe to paying retail prices when I can get similar sets from direct. So if I am a degenerate for being cheap. I will take it as a compliment.

You really are wrong.  I never said Indian made sets are junk, you are the one saying I said that. You are a liar!

I have not judged anyone poorly for going direct.  Once again you are lying.  I did say that in today’s market, I will look to buy the set I want direct before buying from the retailers.  You are a despicable liar.

I never called you a degenerate.  Yes, you are an idiot, a moron and an illiterate.  But I never called you a degenerate.

And I identified you as such things for you insulting and making less of people that buy and sell better products.

You are spineless in that you block me from responding in topics you start.

You claim you only buy direct.  Tell me about how you have or will buy direct from Noj.

This is interesting.  The thing is that the German Knight sets all are priced in the lower range.  Because of that it is difficult to find these sets made in Ebony.  The best you can get is Ebonized.

The Chess Store currently has none listed at all.  The Chess House shows they are all sold out. The Rochester Chess Center (chessset.com) has one model in a brown wood.  The House of Staunton has one for pre-sale after the Queen’s Gambit series.  It is going to be available Ebonized.
There also is the House of Staunton Championship Series with the German Knight.  I own one of these and it is a nice set.  Of course they are currently out of stock.

I also looked at a couple of other sites, but the above are all I found.

Good luck.

If we are talking about tournament chess sets, we must consider the following designs: Staunton, Dubrovnik, Cofee-house, Soviet, Bundesform, Czech, Hungarian, Biro (Romanian-Hungarian). These sets were most used in tournament practice. In my opinion, the best design is Staunton and Biro, because the pieces are best recognizable.

And as for the best tournament chess set, I think that the best chess sets were made by a master who also made the Bobby Fischer chess set. He was very skilful and made only a few sets.Everyone wants to make a good copy of his sets but no one can. Noj is very close but even his Dubrovnik is not as good snd nice as the original. I think that says enough about the master from Yugoslavia from the 60's.

Yes, I agree.

In the time I started this topic, 3 1/2 years ago, other sets have been produced.

The Staunton design with its wider bases and distinct design is still one of the best if not the best.  That Official Staunton Leuchars is a classic Staunton model. And Carl was the originator of its production..  Frank Camaratta has since come out with a few using a Knight design that appears to be his with the notched looking mane.  I have 2 of those sets and with the OS Leuchars, they are probably the best of all.

The Dubrovnik Fischer is also a good design and it plays very well.  Noj is the only company that comes close to the 1960’s original.

I like the looks of the Biro (Romanian - Hungarian) set.  My version of that set came from Chess Bazaar.  I wonder where the best production of that design comes from.

Man! Has this thread sunk to an all time low level....Imo,all parties are at fault, but some more than others.

To fight over chess sets is so dumb,I simply can't wrap my head around it.....If you desire to take shots at each other,it would have more impact if it were about one's chess skills. Not who prefers which manufacturer,or why.

I'm new here, and i'm here because there is useful information on this ste.  But the personal attacks between forum members is awful.  Do you not know how to be polite?

KnightsForkCafe

@Dismayed_Perplexed I agree. With the snob Eyechess. The forums will be more about who is right and have the nicest high priced set. I prefer to help while Eyechess wants to help but points you in more expensive options. Then he bashes people who give more affordable options. Take opinions from Eyechess with a grain of salt. He is a bias chess set reviewer. Who would like to say positive things but in the end is seeking to get insider deals.

The above are all lies about me.
This guy is a proven liar.

The best chess set design ever is the one you love the most... at the moment.

Lest we forget, everyone has an a**hole and an opinion, and sometimes we get them mixed up.
