Bishop: Chess Set Question?

I received a Chess Set for Christmas and the BISHOPS are painted different colors on top & bottom? Could anyone give me an explanation on this?

My guess is that way back when, someone with bad eyesight had a problem distinguishing the bishops from pawns and thought "I'll make sure this doesn't happen again"...

It's the style for some sets. You'll see it in Dubrovnik sets and Zagreb sets. I didn't like it at first, but I love my dubrovnik set now.

Do you mean the contrasting color pom-pom on top? Yeah, it's to quickly distinguish the bishop from the pawn. And in some sets, the queen.
