Hello, I'm a beginner (rated approximately 1200) looking for a book appropriate for my skill level which covers a bit of everything and will help me improve my overall game. Any suggestions (preferably one not too difficult to find)?

I suggest two books. Chess Tactics for Champion by Polgar and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess.

Capablanca's A Primer to Chess is a pretty solid overview.

I'm with Ivan on this one.

Play Winning Chess by Yasser Sierawan.

Also, Winning Chess Strategies by Yasser Sierawan.

When done these, venture down the road to Jeremy Silman's Reassess Your Chess or any one of his books for that mattter.

Enjoy the learning journey!

Thanks for the tips guys! Just to clarify, I'm not 1200 because I just joined, I went as low as about 900 when I joined and have played my way back to 1200 since, so I think I know the rules well enough (though I keep missing that damn en passant in important moments!)

I will take a look at your suggestions and probably pick up one or two

Go to Amazon.com & read the reviews for "Learn Chess--A Complete Course" by Alexander & Beach.  Then buy the book used for a couple of dollars.  It might be the only book you'll need to read.

Take a look at "Logical Chess, move by move".

A lot of full games with annotation of each move, giving you a good feeling how to think in a game.
