Can someone please explain how to get stockfish to load into arena?

Hi all. I've tried to follow youtube directions & nothing seems to work. I've got google chrome (if that matters), I've downloaded arena 3.5, & I've downloaded stockfish DD. How do I get it to work & how can I get an opening book on there? I don't know why it has to be made to be so many steps. Any help would be appreciated.

MrDamonSmith

Anyone?

Why all the damn spam & chess.com won't stop it?

Maybe if you'd be a bit more specific with your problem? It's a bit difficult to deal with generalized "I don't understand, it's not working" type of statements. Smile

P.S. Did you try reading the help file that comes with Arena?

MrDamonSmith

You're right. That's like me saying my car won't start what do I do? I'm seeing if that info will help.

I'm not sure what you mean by this statement. Of course, there's no reason to rename the actual engine executable file (for example, DelfiT.exe), although I guess you could if you wanted to.

However, within the Arena engine management window, I always rename the engine. I'm not about to live with an engine name of DelfiT.exe. Within Arena, I'll rename it to something like "Delfi Trainer 5.4 elo 1200". After all, I'll probably be installing multiple copies of each engine to factor in different strength settings.

First, extract everything from the zip file to a new folder

Then open Arena, click the "engines" drop down at the top of Arena

Click "Install New Engine"

a popup box will show, use that to go to the folder you have stockfish extracted to and highlight(single click) the exe file for Stockfish DD then hit "open"

There may or may not be another box that will ask if it's a UCI or WInboard engine, click UCI

Then it will ask if you want to run the engine, click yes and it should be installed.

Click "engines" again, then click manage and you can see it's installed and go from there....

I am on Windows so I have no idea if that's how the Apple version works....

Good luck.

I'll try that, thx.

Edit: I think that might have worked. I now see Stockfish-dd-64-modern 0 MB showing on Arenas main screen but there was o box showing "stockfish-dd-64-modern.exe has stopped working" then askes if I want to close program. Is that expected/normal?

MrDamonSmith

stockfish is the best in the world, right?

Ok, I believe it's installed right. Now, how do I get an opening book on there? Are there any free with like 5 million master games?

Spiritbro77

That I don't know. I've never attempted to use an opening book or endgame table...

There should be several opening books with Arena - The Perfect 2010 book, and a couple of mini books. If you need more, there are 21 opening books on the Arena site in the "User Files, Engines" area.

You'll need to tell the engine to use a particular book. Drill into the menu system: "Engines --> Manage --> Details tab --> Books tab". Then either select an Arena enginebook or tell it to use the Arena main books with the engine. (For simplicity's sake, just tell it to use the Arena main books.)

After specifying a book for that engine, you'll have to go into the menu system again. This time, "Book --> Manage --> Data tab", then tick either the "Use Arena main book" box or the "Use Arena engine books" box, depending on what you previously selected in the Engines menu system. Oh yeah, make sure you also select an opening book in the "Arena main book" box.

thx

If you don't have a really recent cpu, the modern Stockfish compile might not run on your system, which would explain the error message. If you fixed the problem, I suspect you tried one of the other compiles?

Thanks, SpiritBro! Your post was extremely helpful, as I had the same problem as OP suggested.
