Chavet N° 8

No no, waiting for Walters 8xx 😄

I received a temporary buying ban after my Bohemia repro purchase grin.png

I first present the 173. I only have this photo as an illustration.

Then the 8xx series. It consists of exotic wood set.
856: wenge + olive. The 6 at the end of the combination will always indicate the presence of glass or plastic eyes.
It also exists in 456, but this time, without varnish.
The 8 would therefore indicate varnished exotic woods.

Walterbiensur

Here is the 821. Possibly rosewood and another wood that I have not yet identified. I initially thought an amateur had varnished it, but it is indeed an original model from Chavet.

And finally, the partial contents of a “nest” that I came across.

In 1990, during the WCC, Chavet had a stand there. Here is one of the boxes he marketed. 153/3.
“Challange Special Box” World Chess Championship - Lyon 90.

The king is different from the other kings of the same size, as if to approximate the cutout of the crosses in model n°6. There is also this blue “Henri Chavet” label that I found under one of the boxes and its selling price at the time: 300 francs, or €45, excluding inflation.

The presence of this label with the old logo and the new one on the "Chavet Chess" box proves that we are in 1989-1990, when Chavet changed its visual identity to open up more widely internationally.

To be continued ;-)

Nice find again! Is it me or does that 821 set have really thick stems on the king and queen? Love it!

Walterbiensur

I forgot this version of n°6, which dates from 1990-1995. Queens and knights different from the model used for the WCC1990.

Great stuff Walter. You're definitely my hero for a day.wink

Well seen ! I'll check when I get back from holidays.

That’s an interesting queen. The middle part of the top of the queen appears less sunken in and the curve on the side is more gradual.

Yes, as pictured in post #260. I will update the series to compare them better.

Walterbiensur

Here is a plastic version of a set size 5 sold in a Chavet box. Chavet didn't make plastic, but sold it anyway.

Then another version of a Chavet knight size 5, in boxwood.

lotsoblots

Yeah, I'd *love* a plastic set like that with the usual (?) Chavet knights that we all know and love (Walter's post #443).

Ziryab

I’ve been told that these are Chavet knights. How can I verify?

Walterbiensur

I'm not going to go too far.
What removes the doubt is when it looks like two drops of water to this advertisement from the end of the 70s,

and when it does not look too much like this one

or that one.

Here are some of the ones I own that come close enough, but I also compare the other pieces ...

On the left Chavet, the two on the right Lardy

Ziryab

Thank you @Walterbiensur
The seller told me it was Lardy, that the previous owner bought it in France, and that he had an identical one with a label. It may be that her perception of "identical" missed some details.

@Ziryab

I also suspect some sets with these knights are Chavet. Some sets are more obvious to me than others. Can you post the other pieces?

Powderdigit
I’ve said it before but I think this is one of the best threads on the forum. Always measured and respectful and I learn every day. Thanks everyone, it’s a joy to read. Sometimes the provenance of our sets is hard to trace but with analysis and discussion - we learn a little more all the time.

Thanks @Powderdigit. I hope by next week, I will be able to show you another set which I am sure will please both of us ;-)
