Not a good time for me...and I need to do more research and think about what size I want/can afford. I also have a more pressing issue...a good board w/2" squares. I seem to have every other size known to man but the most common.
Chavet N° 8

Another good find! I wonder about the 3rd one listed as Jeu Staunton. Sometimes I see sets listed as Chavet but do not look like a Chavet set. I wonder if I have ever seen the 3rd one and just blew off as an incorrect listing.
Thank you. I have the same questions about these games and hope to be able to unravel its mysteries by next month. I have scheduled a little tour around Dortan and Lyon. I hope to meet the right people there who could enlighten me.

Sweet! Is that handwritten by Henri Chavet himself?
Yes Michael, it looks like that. The letter is dated Dec. 07, 1932. Henri Chavet is addressing a potential customer (distributor), and he clearly states "MY chess price". And since he was not stingy, he directly offers 10% off ;-)

To my shame, I don't own a Chavet...yet. Those are exquisite and that's also a beautiful board Walter. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. The chessboard is an old game of "trictrac" or Jacquet (backgammon).
Here they are quite easily found without breaking the bank. I do not spend more than 30 40 euros for it. As for the Chavet games, I find the asking prices for the small sizes, 1 to 4, really too high… or so I have no idea of their real value. Maybe I should put some on sale with the right price ;-), knowing that others sell them with hallucinating margins, but it's their livelihood.

There is a B207 now. Although the sellers measurements look a little suspect.
My B207A king eyeballs out to about 82mm. Her king photo may have a little parallax.

I don't know which ebay set you guys are talking about. From my observation, B207a is approx. 83mm and B207 without a is approx. 88mm.

If it was possible to clear this up, I would be delighted. Remember post #55: the 207A did not exist and was replaced by a B206. But that may be another mistake. Personally, I've never had a size 5 box with a label other than 5... and the vast majority of my 4s measure around 82-83

I found several B207a, some from members here, some from eBay which I asked if the seller could verify the KH. All sets with that label B207a all are approx 83mm.
The odd thing is, I have never seen B208 label and if my recollection serves me right, I did see B207 once but I didn't bother to save that picture then.
If I look at the second picture, that storage box looks big enough to store size 5 set (88mm). The first and 3rd box I couldn't tell for sure as how optically those pictures were taken.

I still can't figure it out why B207a existed, one of my theory is that they slapped A behind 207 to indicate it's meant for export or they had too many B207 boxes and they used those for size 4 sets.

Another idea, if I remained pragmatic, I would say that:
B = Boxwood (Buis - buxus)
A = Antiqued (Antique)
Also It seems logical to me that all the labels were written in France before being sent around the world. You have to know what's in the box.
It is therefore curious to find 7 written in English and not in French (7 with a horizontal line in the middle).
And to come back to the 207A for sale, it does not have a label, the seller estimates it to be from the 40s-60s (for me +|- 1990s).
207A has become something of a marketing label as opposed to an equally beautiful 153/4 😇. Like a B210 for 121/6 or 153/6 ;-)

And to stay in what is curious, here is what appears to be a Chavet prototype (n°39), size 2 dated 1996. "La marche du Roy". 3D chessboard.

Last year, I set myself the goal of visiting Dortan, then the "Cercle Olympiques d'Echecs de Lyon".
The first step was of course to be able to visit this house… the doors remain closed.
A few kilometers away, I went to Jurabuis, which had taken over the manufacture of Chavet games. The company is unfortunately in very great difficulty and it is not certain that it can continue to exist until the end of this month...
I couldn't get more information on the still many questions I have about Chavet. I still received this business card.
In any case, Jurabuis will not be able to redo games of size 6. "The boxwood moth" (Cydalima perspectalis) having done a lot of damage in 2017, it would be necessary to wait several years before being able to harvest wood big enough to make parts of this size.
Curios knight…
Arrived in the chess club of Lyon, I discovered this photo. It dates from 2008, when Karpov returned to Lyon for the first time, after the 1990 World Championships.
I find there the famous red games identified in post #37.
I did not have any precision on its origin, Chavet or not Chavet… (Club size)
The famous Gardé clock…
and another Club-sized chess set Karpov played with in 2008
It's very poor in revelations, and that forces me to go back there hoping to meet the people who will give me their anecdotes about these very particular Chess sets.

Wow! Thanks for sharing! Only Karpov can rock a forlock like that. (now that Hitler's dead) That white rook looks like it took some of Kasparovs cannon fire, and I love the clock. I'm sad to hear of their boxwood situation. It's hard enough to be in business these days without a plague of moths descending on your material. Thanks for the virtual tour and perhaps you'll receive your answers next time.

Sad to hear they had this wood harvest setback
Hat off to you for making the trip! Did you use google translator speaking to them? You should have called me and I'd talk to them making them using google translator!
Did you find out more about the timeline? Also like when did they start using Bxxx naming convention? You wait, I have many more questions.
It's one of those timing things...when I have the money, no Chavets. When I don't, there they are...It'll happen eventually.
