Chess Board that prevents cat from moving pieces

My wife and I want to play chess OTB, and we have a nice area of the house used for games, etc... We have a chess board that we can use, and we'd like to, throughout the day, walk by, and move a piece so that the game will go on throughout the day. The problem is that we have a cat, and she will inevitably get up there and knock over pieces, etc... So, we'd like to have a setup that is protected from feline tampering. The best we've come up with is to place a chess board in a cake pan or rubbermaid storage box, but then, that's not very attractive to leave sitting out all the time.

Is there a setup that would be attractive and functional?

I use one of those square umbrella picnic food covers to protect my board and pieces. Do a search, they come in lots of different sizes.

Have you met a cat? Any cat worth its salt would defeat that in less than a second. tongue

My biggest problem with our cat is I can't leave the chess pieces storage box open, she tries to get in it !

Good taste.

Maybe we are trying to solve the problem from the wrong direction? Maybe the solution needs to be more bottom up? Perhaps something like this .....

I've suggested getting rid of the cat as a solution. happy.png

I'm pretty sure that didn't go over so well...

Insert your own cat joke here. Or for that matter, musings about how being married is like a chess game, whether actual chess is or is not played...

To address the real question, however, the only way I can see a walk-by game would work with a cat roaming the house (not to mention a kitten or a puppy) would be to do it on a screen, like an ipad or something, rather than an actual chessboard. Granted, this would not be quite as enjoyable an experience.

You need a better cat - my cat is completely trustworthy around chess sets, even fairly expensive ones.

Your cat looks like it's bored after winning a 1000 matches in a row against a person. I'm gonna call it the "Look of I'm better than you, so stop wasting my time".

I don't even know why I came to this forum. I don't even have a cat. *sigh* It's a sad world I live in.

Get a cat. They're awesome.

Use a glass or acrylic display case with a lift-off or hinged lid to protect the chessboard while keeping it attractive and accessible—this will let you and your wife play throughout the day without your cat disturbing the pieces.

Not sure if the OP is even watching this anymore, but that is the perfect solution!

Maybe consider citrus spray? It smells nice but deters cats from your board.....

How so?
