Chess books for real beginners.

Hello everybody !

So, I have a friend who learnt to play two years ago (more and less) and today, she asks me some advice or books to help her.

She's a real beginner and I advised her to keep doing chess puzzles to progress but I don't know what books to recommend her.

I just know that she needs to learn the basic principle of the opening and work on tactical exercices.

So, what kind of books would your recommend for her ?

Thanks (for her), for the answers !

Salut !

Oui, je pensais à la Méthode par Étapes justement !

Pour Silman, je ne sais pas si je lui recommenderais ça tout de suite mais pourquoi pas.

A lot of good software/online material, but if you insist on "books" for absolute beginners, I like the following...

Beginner overall chess instruction (broadly covering most chess topics):
1. Chess Steps level 1 workbooks (excellent)
2. Comprehensive Chess Course, vol. 1 & 2, by Lev Alburt (excellent)
3. A World Champion's Guide to Chess by Susan Polgar.
4. Consider Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide to Chess
5. Consider The Idiot's Guide to Chess by Patrick Wolffe, though a number of the puzzles he gives are for more advanced players
6. Consider The Complete Book of Chess Strategy by Jeremy Silman (in spite of the title, he covers every aspect of the game with simple-to-understand prose).

Beginner puzzle books:
1. Predator at the Chessboard vol 1 and 2 by Ward Farnsworth (the best in my opinion for beginner puzzles in book form)
2. Chess Tactics for Champions by Susan Polgar

Beginner strategy books:
1. Weapons of Chess by Bruce Pandolfini's
2. The Complete Book of Chess Strategy by Jeremy Silman (mentioned above also)

Beginner endgame books:
1. The 0-1000 chapter of Silman's Complete Endgame Course.
2. Other beginner Endgame stuff is in the first category of books listed above.

If you are willing to do online/software, then I recommend Chess Steps and Chess Tutor level 1 and any number of Chess Mentor modules geared toward beginners.

I love books!  Mainly chess books!!  For a beginner I like "Learn Chess-A Complete Course" by Alexander & Beach.  It might be the only book they ever need.

Chess for Dummies is the best book for beginners and patzers and even intermediate players. Suggesting a LIST of books only discourage and confuse the OP.

TMI too much information avoid drowning in a sea of authors  keep it simple and straight forward otherwise it'll feel like School and she'll be overwelmed.

Winning-Chess-Perfect How to perfect Attacking Play by Irving Chernev

1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations (revised edition) by Fred Reinfeld

1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate (revised edition) by Fred Reinfeld

The Game of Chess Siegbert Tarrasch

1001 Deadly Checkmates by John Nunn

Practice makes the player a good player hits the ball until he or she can't get it wrong and bats it out of the park again and again. Chess has alot of similarities to boxing and martial arts like kick boxing you never stop improving and working on something shadow boxing, kicking, punching, kneeing focus likewise in Chess you constantly work on form technique some aspect of your game that needs work this goes on for a life time no matter what your skill level is.

Good luck!

Play Winning Chess by Seirawan or Word's Champion Guide to Chess by Polgar.

If you search "Soviet Chess Primer" in this category of the forums (Chess Books & Equipment), there is a thread with only 2 posts, but one of them with a link to a detailed review of the book... the reviewer feels this book is most certainly too advanced for what we would typically call a "beginner", but check it out.

I like "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess." They don't need to know notation, and it's step by step simple puzzles engaging the reader with questions. Bobby did chess books right!

I have this book at home, really good book indeed but yes, too advanced for her I think.
