I've heard good things about Caissa for the iPhone-- and it allows you to play in "manual mode" and make moves for both sides as well, in case you don't want to play against the computer. Definetly cheaper and more convenient than a portable chess computer.

Hi, I'm a beginner chess player and I'm trying to get better by playing here at chess.com and also by reading some books. When using books though, I need to have a board in front of me otherwise I get lost with the notations so I started using Chessmaster 10 that not only allows me to setup different positions as outlined in the book, follow step by step, but also play from the setup position against the computer.
This arrangement works OK but I'm tied to the PC when I need to read a chess book. I am now between two better alternatives, either purchase a chess computer that I can take it with me anywhere or purchase a program for my iPhone.
Any suggestions/recommendations on chess computer or iPhone app? Which would you recommend for someone that's only trying to follow the books and play a bit while on the road?
Thanks!
Daniel
