You tell us. It looks like plastic.

MarshalM1999

Why would I ask the question if I knew and it’s not plastic

ChessAuthor

Are they heavy? If not plastic, maybe resin? They don't look too old. 1980s at the oldest I would guess.

MarshalM1999

Thanks for coming back, they were found in the back of my nans wardrobe and they are rather light, one of the light brown ones is broken and reveals a light cream colour internally I don’t think it’s plastic but could well be

MarshalM1999

The pawns are the same but all slightly different shape and weight and that makes me think they are potentially hand made

ChessAuthor

Can you post a close up of the broken piece so we can see the lighter internal color? And a pic of the bottom of one or two pieces. If they have felt, are there any loose felts so yo can see underneath?

Also, are they solid or hollow?

MarshalM1999

No problem will do in a couple of hours, they are solid and I’m not sure what is meant by felts sorry!

ChessAuthor

That's okay. I mean on the bottom of the pieces. Often there are soft pieces of felt on the bottom as a pad so the pieces don't scratch the board. From the photo you already posted it doesn't look like they have felt on the bottom.

It looks like a standard set from China made for Western tourists, sometimes called a Mandarin set. Try running a google search for that term to look for similar items. The material could be any number of things, but I would guess either resin or a combination of decomposed granite and resin (to make it more like stone/marble).

MarshalM1999

that’s a great thought thank you
