Chess storage box

What's the latest information on the availability of chess storage boxes?  I understand why the fancy solid wood, fitted boxes cost a lot but I'm surprised that the cheaper boxes cost more and look worse than nice cigar humidors that sell for 30 bucks or less.  I've bought a couple of humidors and lined them  with felt for piece storage, but does anyone have a better alternative that looks decent and isn't too pricey? (I.e. nice wooden box for under $40 or fitted case for under $70)?

Silverware box.  I see them all the time at thrift stores.

I always mean to buy one but then I think "that money could go towards another chess set..."

Tupperware

Antique it for the look of wood.

A cigar box. Some of them are very large and fancy. So, get a big 'ol fancy cigar box.

I'd stick with those cheap cigar humidors. They're the best! I get mine from amazon for less than thirty bucks, line the bottoms with felt, and voila! And the cedar smells great.

Yes.  That's just what I've done.  Guess nothing is better.

If something's better, I'd love to see it.

Brilliant, Up. Brilliant.

Up, which boxes do you recommend for which sized sets?

It appears you've made a fatal mistake.  Apparently you are unaware of the terrible curse associated with swapping king tops.

Thanks, cgrau. The boxes that I have are those meant to hold 25-50 cigars. That particular set is of 3.9" kings with extra queens and there is more than enough room. I use one for a 4.5 inch set and it fits nicely. Presently I'm using one to rid a Soviet set of its musty smell. It's working like a charm.

Buy more than one at a time.

I purchased fifty boxes from them "wholesale" (at close to their "retail" price per box, but the shipping for the fifty boxes was more than reasonable, so that, as I recall, my cost was somewhere in the vicinity of $13 per box).

That's a lot of storage boxes! What size sets fit in them?

These boxes hold almost all of the 3.75" sets with extra queens that I own (and even a few 4" sets with extra queens). Exceptions are 3.75" sets with extra queens that have thicker pieces and/or large pawns as, for example, the House of Chess 3.75" Regal set. The rather thick ChessBazaar 3.625" Dubrovnik set with extra queens just barely fits into one of these boxes after much careful arrangement of the chessmen.

The boxes that I received from this Polish company (aka Sunrise Handicrafts) differed somewhat in the dimensions that they list in that while the length of the boxes is the same at about 8-2/3", the width was actually about 5" and the height was about 3.5", which works out to a slightly greater volume per box than the dimensions that they list on their website.

They are slightly larger than the cigar humidor below that I purchased from Amazon (whose actual dimensions are smaller than those given by Amazon) and have considerably more interior space because the boxes are nowhere near as thick, nor does the lid fit inside of the bottom of the boxes, as it does in the cigar humidor.

The Wholesale Chess boxes above easily fit the largest chess sets that I have, including a 5" set with extra queens, with lots of room to spare.
