Why not ask Fritz/Chessbase Support?
Windows 10, Fritz 11.
I am considering that; I'll ask whereever I think I'd find an answer.
Usually people who met the same issue have answers whereas techsupport wants you to turn your machine off and on again. Last issue I had, StockFish hogging my machine, was resolved in these forums.
I sent an e-mail to support, haven't received an answer.
If anyone has an idea on where else to ask, I'm all ears.
I want such a simple thing, something I had back in the nineties - I want to be able to set up my computer to play against it!
How is this supersoftware Chessbase not able to do it in a simple manner?
Might not be what you are looking for but I regularly do this via LucasChess - really nice and free software. It has a lot of engines, like Stockfish, to play against.
I think it might be very close to what I'm looking for; if chessbase itself cannot do it, then I'll have to find an alternative either way.
My advice is use the right tool for the right job. Chessbase is database software. That's its focus. The GUI, the design, everything is directed at manipulating a database. Other features are tacked in there, sure, but it will never do them well without sacrificing the focus on database manipulation. Chessbase is not the right tool for playing against a computer opponent. Yes, you can do it with it, but it's just not that great at it.
Lucas Chess is designed for this. It's great. Easy, straight-forward, flexible, and powerful. Also, great news: it's free.
I have a couple of relatively simple and highly annoying issues trying to use Chessbase & Fritz (or StockFish, for that matter).
What I want to do is set up a position in chessbase, and then play it against a computer.
I have tried setting up a position, and once I'm done clicking File-GoToFritz.
Two issues that have popped up are
1) GoTo Fritz ALWAYS asks me for a path to Fritz. Even after I've set it up, if I select GoTo Fritz later on it'll ask me for the path again. It is in common files/chessbase/engines
2) Once I get it running I have no idea how to make Fritz move after time X. I can keep pressing spacebar key to force him to move, but I'd prefer it if he moved after 10 or 20 seconds without the spacebar.
My question is, is there a more elegant way to play chess (setup positions) against a computer using Chessbase?
I wouldn't mind playing against StockFish, although with the GoTo Fritz option in the FIle menu Fritz might be easier
