The DGT website has BT and a loader app if you need to update your firmware.

That would be great if it's possible. I have a USB only board, I was under the impression I wasn't able to update the firmware on those? (In principle it would be possible via a USB connection, but I'm not sure they put an EEPROM in the board itself for that capability given it's age).

You can upgrade the module if required. A few on here have done it.

As far as I can tell, that would require disassembling the unit at a minimum since a software only method isn't available except for Bluetooth or Revelation boards unless you are aware of some other solution not shown on their website. (ie here is all that I know of that's available no links can be inserted apparently: "xxxx://digitalgametechnology.com/support/software/software-downloads" ). My only reason to want to do this would be for protocol compatibility for chessconnect or the like, the board itself works fine with engines.

Jörn is working to support the older mini usb boards as far as I know.

Also, as far as I know the BT boards are only updatable to update the BT protocols as they evolve. According to one of the Lichess developers. I’m no expert by any means.

Jörn told me and I'm looking forward to beta testing the bleeding edge version, but in the off chance it was possible why not? DGT's materials say the USB only is not field updatable, so aside from some h/w hacking (assuming you could even get the latest firmware image) it's not worth the effort, so I'll just wait. I did see a livechess connection video 3 years old, that permitted DGT connection on lichess, but it was rather kludgy. chessconnect is far more streamlined.

This is great as we should expect most DGT board owners have the miniUSB only version.
I could only hope that the serial port version also be supported when using a supported serial-to-USB adapter.

@joernupbde - FYI, in the game in the video I just published (see below), the board lights on my Chessnut Air stayed on right after long castling (at 4:18 of the video). This cleared itself after the next move and didn't otherwise affect the game. I'm not sure if this is a glitch? Continue the good work!

If everything goes according to plan (when does it ever?...), I will send out a test version to selected users during this week. Maybe even today... 😇

This should be fixed in the most recent version 3.3.26 which was released on Sunday 28th of April. If you did use this version, please let me know. (Or if anybody has a similar effect with 3.3.27 for that matter.)

That version also fixed analysis board not working properly on chess.com.

jewelmind

Happy to receive the test version :-)

joernupbde

There really seem to be a lot of old DGT boards around. 😊

@jewelmind: Can you send me your email address? I'll add you to the list, then.

I noticed one minor issue where if only one move is made and the opponent aborts the game, the extension will audibly state "Draw".

Thank you for pointing that out! Does this refer to lichess, chess.com, or both?

I've seen it on here and wondered about that today.

GeorgeGoodnight

Another thing I've noticed is that the extension does not distinguish between pieces when either horsey can move to the same square. It does differentiate between rooks, however.

Great work, thanks for your continued effort with this Jörn.

Im pretty sure that this is not a general issue with knights but a problem with a specific kind of position. Do you know the exact position (e.g. FEN) where this happened?

I don't. I'll keep a note in the future though.

joernupbde

To all of you with (very) old DGT boards: the testers and myself are making good progress and I am very confident now that the next version of Chessconnect will fully support these boards, too. 😎

chessroboto

Do The “old” DGT boards include those with Serial ports or just older miniUSB ports?

joernupbde

In theory, serial port should work, too. If anybody has access to such a board and wants to try, I am happy to provide the test version.

I have access to one and the proper usb to serial cable. Let me know what steps I need to do to assist.

Did I miss the early test version of the "old board" mods, it sounds like something is being alpha/beta tested based on earlier comments?

Lichess for sure... Similarly, run to the end of this video (7:53) where I checkmate the person and there is no "White wins" announcement.

I'm also beginning to wonder if at some point chess.com is detecting the extension and disabling the communication to it. The past two days, I've disconnected, and the extension will not reconnect again. Piece placement is not the issue. It won't reconnect even if I start a new game. It "feels" like a chess.com issue...
