No not at all, we have tried to make the update process as seamless as possible. Thanks it was exciting to get the certification for sure!

Chess Note will make cheating in chess even easier. Just hide an engine inside it professionally and there you go!!

Thanks for the advice!

Macer,

If you have questions about security on the product please feel free to reach out through the forums or our website under the FAQ. You can not load an engine onto our product to cheat, if you could do that US Chess Federation would not have certified the device.

Oh... that's too bad :(

This is really good news. The products currently available look like they were designed fifty years ago. Still, I think that the whole process is quite cumbersome. I am sure that it would be not hard to find a Chinese company that could design something very similar to the Nexus 6 for you without the components that would make it problematic for the USCF/FIDE certification for much less than the cost of a Nexus phone. Are you expecting anything from FIDE soon?

JoeyTroy

NM Setne007,

We have looked at partnering with a Chinese manufacturer, sadly we don't have $300,000 USD sitting around not to mention a place to house 3000 units in an industry that has watched 3 vendors come and and go (Monroi, eNotate & Plycounter). I know it's not a perfect model but the sales keep coming in and customers are more than happy with the product specially with the constant updates and features we keep adding.

In terms of FIDE we have not opened that door yet due to international sales as I agree it would be extremely cumbersome not to mention as soon as it leaves US waters it's going to be difficult to see what happens to the product in terms of tracking. We are going to stay the course for now with US Chess customers and if this thing shows it's going to take off then that is a decision we will look into for sure! I just don't want to put the company in the same situation Monroi and Plycounter is in.

I'm just curious, how is the private key controlled?

A previous product I worked on, we simply kept the private key "secure" by just not telling anybody w/o the need to know.  And yet, we required customers to use hardware security modules : )

mgx,

Curiosity killed the cat 😀 no one needs to know 🤣

mgx9600

So, if I acquire your company, can I then become a chess GM ?  : )

JoeyTroy

In the wise words of Hulk Holgan "Say your prayers, take your vitamins and you will never go wrong". In terms of GM I can't promise you that, that comes down to studying and out playing your opponent time and time again.

Our product will allow you to study your games using ChessBase after your game is complete by downloading the game to a PC. It will also allow you to see how much time you spent on your moves. If you work on those two things you can pick up some rating points but GM is a whole nother story.

All serious inquiries for purchase can be sent to buyusforabillion@chessnoter.com

It simply amazes me the lack understanding WRT computer security by even industry folks.  Without being open, there's a lot to go wrong (and remain hidden for better or worse).

JoeyTroy

mgx,

There is nothing about our product that needs to be open. Does Microsoft open the code? Does Cisco open the code? Does Apple open the code? Did Monrio, Plycounter, eNotate, or DGT open the code?

At the end of the day how we implemented security is based on best practices from the ITIL. I am not sure why there is more information you need that our website doesn't already touch on?

mgx9600

It's a bit different than releasing the source code.

When I use open in the security context, it is more about opening the algorithm and method of doing things.  Like encryption algorithms being open (and still have many implementations).

For example, in your case, how is the private key kept private?  Could anybody have access to it?  How is it guarded against that person w/ access from using it outside?  These are many more issues I'm sure.  I'm just casually replying to your posts (I'm sure more serious issues can come up if looked into more closely).

JoeyTroy

I know what you meant in regards to the private key. We have done our due diligence to make sure everything works as desired and made sure the application and SSH server is secure along with the OS. The bottom line is it's a solid implementation of software and hardware following best principles with security at the forefront of our design.

questions or thoughts?

Can the chessnoter download pgn files onto a tablet or just laptops and pc only?

Will there be an analysis mode added? For instance, it can be programmed to be only be used on completed games and not current games.

I may have more but from what I've seen, you all have covered quite a bit of options and i find them very favorable for those who want to use electronic notation (me!) versus traditional means.

Thanks in advance!

JoeyTroy

BFishIsMyFav,

It does offer a review game but you are not allowed to move the pieces around board. We may add that features but it would not include an engine. For customers I have talked to they like to use the review game OTB with their opponent as it's much quicker to do analysis than using a paper score sheet with errors, or they just download the game to a PC and run it against ChessBase, SCID etc.

In terms of copying the game off right now it only works with USB to a PC (Windows, Apple, Linux). We may add future options but have not explored that as of yet as customers seem happy with the current options. The focus has been adding more features that players want to see and handling those through monthly updates. If you ever want to see all the options as we add them you can keep an eye out on our site under support and you can watch the Video Updates on the left hand side.

JoeyTroy,

I appreciate the response. I usually have my tablet with (Samsung Tab A) and feel a bit restricted after tournaments when I want to review games via chessbase or stockfish. I see people with laptops and i thought it was interesting that most developers leave out the tablet crowd.

I have watched all the videos on the post and the website to get an idea of the chessnoter as well. I currently have the version 1 plycounter and while it is a very capable devices, it is not without shortcomings. The approach you all have is just scratching the surface and is very promising to say the least.

Ultimately, I would love to just download pgn games to my tablet and use the engines on my tablet as well without having to come home and analyze. Getting a laptop is archaic for me lol.

JoeyTroy

My pleasure. I'll do some research on this and see how feasible it is. If you had a male to male micro usb you maybe able to copy the files if there was an application on Android that worked like a file manager on Windows and saw the USB show up like a drive. I'll add it to my feature tracker and if I figure something out I'll let you know.

JoeyTroy,

I appreciate you again. Thanks for informational insight and I look forward the using the chessnoter in the near future!

JoeyTroy

My pleasure!

If it is a version of Android, why does it need to be a Nexus 6?

This is the only device we could secure. Once we load our custom ROM the bootloader can not be unlocked.
